As around a 5 year old kid, I jumped up and stomped on ketchup packets that were laying in a parking lot once too. My mom, who was holding my hand, did not appreciate being sprayed with ketchup.

While in college, a buddy and I filled a microwave, on a floor we had a rivalry with, with ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise packets and set the dial at the highest power for as many 9s for time a it would take. We expected to make a huge mess for those guys to clean. We were disappointed that the packs just mostly just shriveled up and dried out.

About 1946, Iuka Kansas, "Shorty McDowel" gas station: I remember that my father had to hand pump the amount of gas he wanted to buy into a glass container at the top of the pump. Gas was rationed due to the war. I don' remember him ever running out of ration tickets though. He still trapped during the winter.

I remember when there was talk of self-service gas. Didn't think it would get off the ground. I was still checking oil and washing windows.

See the old Coca Cola pop machine? We'd go up at night with a pop bottle opener, open the lid, pop the caps off our favorite pop and drink it through a straw. That worked for several months until old Don Limb moved the pop machine inside.

Carbides on the skidoo cuts them,they dont like that-they have signage warning the skidooers pulling up to the pumps not to drive over the hose.

Back in my high school days we would walk up town for some lunch.

This one kid always would ring the gas station bell as we passed. Bringing the attendant out. And not happy.

One day heading uptown, the kid decided to ring the bell. But to his surprise the attendant was near the door, caught him.

The attendant dragged him into the garage and proceeded to fill his back of pants with the air powered grease gun.

The kid ran off to school and went home. I always wonder how he explained that to his folks.

By the way, he never graduated with my class. He transferred to another school, and graduated.

Also got Green Stamps and Blue Stamps when you filled up.I got a nice Knife and Hatchet combo with Green Stamps.Nice Packsack too.They also checked your oil and washed your windows while they were filling you up.

I remember when there used to be a little bit of gas left in the bend of the hose when people hung it up. On my walk to grandma's house, I could drain what was left in 2 hoses into the mower and have enough gas to mow her yard without having to purchase fuel. Always thought that was pretty cool.


As far as living in a small town. I outran the sheriff on my (grandpa's) 3-wheeler, thought I had pulled of some "Smokey and the Bandit" or "Duke Boy" stuff. Next morning the sheriff spoke to Grandpa at the coffee shop. That put an end to my career as a getaway driver.

We washed windshields and asked if they wanted their oil checked.

those orange 76 balls at a truckstop always had a good 24 hour restaurant. ontario ca, amarillo tx, gary in, one just east of des moines were my favorites. was one in wildwood fl that could have had tv shows made about it for all the drugs and prostitution going on. a lot of them are ta's now as trans america bought 76 out. ta restaurants are pretty sorry.
