Does anyone make a good radio with long range right out of the box or do you have to go old school? Looking for one to put in the shop here and another for camp in Canada.

FM doesnt reach very far. 60 miles is about all it can do before it starts breaking up. I can get AM stations out of canada at night here when the local AM channel powers down.

Makes a great radio, cord and "C" batteries if needed, works in remote Alaska very well.

My Super Wide will pull your broken down 4 stroke, up a hill backwards, with you on it!

Eton / Grundig

I have an S350DL I have had for probably 15 years maybe 20
we had another before that I think it took a fall or got wet I can't remember any more.

it is a am fm short wave

it can do external antennas and give audio output to another source
very tunable and sensitive for a portable radio

runs a long time on D batteries but can also run on AA or a power adapter to the wall

has an alarm clock built in and auto shut off so you don't run down your batteries you can press the power button to bump down the auto shut of it starts at I think 75 minutes and goes down in 10 minute increments

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I had an old 50's radio in my basement I'd turn on when shucking scallops, AM worked great during the day but at night I'd only get 1 station from Maine I think it was. That was an old school radio. grin

You can get external antennas to help improve reception when your on the edges of the transmission ranges

AM radios don't like AC power at all. Reception is better on those if you use battery power.

On FM of you can switch to mono mode youll get a better signal.

[quote=Tatiana]There's Radio Garden, for where you have cell/Internet coverage. You can listen to pretty much any registered AM/FM station from anywhere in the world. Many people I know use it. It's free.

Interesting.

It's easy to get radio stations if you have Internet connection. Especially US stations since most are owned by iheart, just use the free app. I'm sure cumulus and the other big radio company have their own app

Federal laws limit the range of a radio station, AM & FM, If you want distance go Short Wave. It's even against the law to listen to an AM OR FM station that exceeds it's limit due to "SKIP". When I was a kid, I made it a point to turn on the SW at 8 PM every night to listen to Big Ben chime and the BBC station till bedtime.

Every kid needs a Dog and a Curmudgeon.

From midnight to about 4am I could get KFAB from Omaha NE while I was in NW Ontario. Around 900 miles. I always thought that was cool.

Probably a wanted man now!

I doubt it's illegal to listen to a signal broadcast overnight. Your local am station has to shutdown or at least power down so it can't interfere with stations farther away that still is broadcasting because the skip would interfere. If would be a rather unenforceable rule if it was indeed illegal.

I have a C.Crane radio, had it for a long time, at least a decade.
I use it in the shop while working. I find it frustrating. I run it off the ac. It hard to find a spot that it gets good reception. Once you do your fine. Then the next day it may not work and your hunting for good reception again.
I listen to a Local FM station primarily.

AM won’t work at all in my shop because of the LED lights.

You can hear 700 WLW out of Cinci in the middle of Nebraska on a clear night.

You guys having radio trouble make sure you have wires plugged into the back of your radio for an antenna. Add wire to it run it outside of your pole barn for example. Wire loops are supposed to make a good antenna. There might be both AM and FM ports.

I am contemplating letting my license expire , I don't use it much and those dirty buggers raised the registration to 65 dollars now.

if radio was my only thing and I was active that wouldn't be a big deal but man everyone wants a fee now to keep your credentials.

GCP, where are you getting the $65 cost to renew from? Mine is up for renewal next year and from what is posted now on the FCC, ARRL, and other websites it is only $35 to renew for another 10 years. There are some places that do charge a fee for completing the renewal for you, but you do not have to use them unless you just want the convenience of not doing it yourself. The new fee started in 2022 and hasn't changed to my knowledge.

now I need to look at that , maybe I am confusing a different fee that went up , seems everything keeps going up , or my money is worth less I guess you could say

35 I might do

And run a ground wire. Be surprised what a difference this makes

That’s what I have in the shop now. Not crazy impressed with it actually. I need to hook up a good ground and outdoor antenna but I’m only 30 miles or less from some stations that are fuzzy, even on AM.

Have extra class ham, used to have broadcast license. I'm told that I have the perfect face for radio.

I'm 65-70 miles north of NYC and hear stations down there perfectly on mine.
