Oil flows to where it can be refined. Even though oil is fungible it has different chemical compositions. Some refineries are designed to process heavy sour crude and some refineries are designed to process light sweet crude. The United States currently uses somewhere north of 20 million barrels per day of crude and produces 13 million barrels per day of crude. We are by no means energy independent. Saudia Arabia has drawn a line in the sand and declared they are willing to accept lower crude prices in order to maintain market share. A poster above correctly stated oil shut in anywhere affects oil prices everywhere. Biden used the SPR to influence the 2022 midterms. We should be refilling it now but probably aren't because of the 2024 election. A widening of the current middle east conflict will send prices higher.

Yes the U.S. is Energy Independent in net energy used compared to exported. Energy is measured in BTUs, not barrels of crude oil. No the U.S. is not energy independent in that we do import energy producing products from other countries and are not able to supply all our energy producing products.
