Made the trek out west with the smoke poles again this year! Got mine the second day of season @92 yards. We knew there were elk in the neighborhood. First time I’ve had an elk come in fired up and bugling at a calling set! All others have been silent.

My buddies tag teamed the second elk on the afternoon of our last day of hunting! We had just bumped a small group of cows/calves right where we were planning to do a calling set. Did an emergency lost calf call when that happened then decided to move forward to our next calllable area, probably 250 yds ahead. We were discussing our setup and if that was a good spot quietly when I felt the urge to take a leak. I turned around and while trying to find my zipper noticed a bull coming through the popples straight at us about 75 yards away with his nose to the ground. I quickly got the shooters attention and they ran down to me, got in position, and about 10 second later he came around a balsam tree about 25 yds away and they fired almost simultaneously. The wind was going straight from him to us and had they not fired when they did we likely would have been darn near run over as the chute he was coming up between the trees was only 15 ft wide. Quite the lucky and quick situation! Guessing he was trailing the cows we had just bumped. That bull was so muddy and wallowed up it was amazing. Made for a late night and messed up departure the next day but we weren’t complaining even if I’m still tired and sore from that week!

Sure love going out west, taking in all the scenery, learning the areas, and chasing these critters! Happy trapping! ScottW

I have been pretty luck over the past few years. As an out of stater who hunts public ground, I don't have the time to scout and pattern a particular elk. I have to take what I can get. I have passed on some cows a few times early in the season, but have not passed on any legal bulls.

Thanks for the thread! I'm enjoying seeing the pictures!

Arrowed this spike this fall 2 hours into my first day of OTC elk season and my big bull from 2023 on a draw tag. That was a short hunt too only took half hour
