What is the best way to wax traps? Do you put wax in water and then heat up so it coats the surface and pull the trap through it? Or do you just use all wax in a pan and heat?

Thanks Savell I use to be smiley, but now my fox are getting smart so I have to go through all this waxing process now :):) those two smiles were just for you.

So I need LOTS of wax then don't I.

I add a little resin to help the wax hold to the trap. You will see the wax stop rolling once your trap is up to the same temperature. Make sure to clean the wax off the end of the dog and where it hooks to the pan. Otherwise it may not stay set.

Also It is about impossible for me to get traps to rust right now, so I can't die them. Will the wax hold to a trap that is not rusted?

Hey do you guys know if it would be ok to use unscented candle wax? The local sporting goods store was sold out of trap wax so i bought some of the candle stuff at walmart.

the large size coffee can will hold up to a 1 3/4 size coilspring if you want to save on wax...a couple pounds will be enough if I remember correctly....and the wax will adhere to a shiny trap as long as it's degreased

i've always used the wax from the trappers supply with good results...I have no experience with any other type of wax

....to **** with beavers, I'd rather skin 4 fox and 3 cats than one stinking beaver

I take a galvanized wash tub and put water in it. I put a smaller tub inside of the one with water and put wax in it. I bring the tub of water to a boil and put my traps in the wax once it is fully melted.

Make sure the trap stays in the wax long enough to get as hot as the wax.

Why the double boiler? Prevents getting the wax so hot it burns or catches fire.

Savell have you seen how greasy and fatty the fox are up here? I will send you some to flesh for me.

Thanks for the help guys, being that I have to do it in the house I really like the double boiler trick. And I just ordered 10lbs from MTP.

Don't use beeswax....unless it's for water traps. It tend to be a bit gummy as well. The smell is NOT good for canine trapping.

Candle wax is great....just make sure it has no foreign odors. Just add a piece of dried pine sap (cut it up fine) the size of a grape to about 3 gallons of melted wax. No problem on undyed traps. It'll stick.

All I use!

No trees at all? Spruce, pine,
Douglas fir....any conifer will work.
Haven't been to Nunivak Island...but have been to lots of Alaska's coast and some interior. No trees at all....I can't hardly imagine that. Is it all tidal flat mud, rock and grass?

Living in the Pacific NW....we have so many trees I always get a kick remembering what a Midwest visitor told me he thought of it. "There's so many trees I feel clausterphobic". LOL! I know what he was talking about, I used to live in the Canadian prairies....just about no trees there.

no trees at all, it is a bunch of old volcanoes. We have some willows that grow in the low areas, they get about 3-4 ft high thats it. Everything else is bare tundra and lava rock. Once the low areas are covered in snow it is touch snowmachining because you have no contract from snow to sky on dreary days, gives you a headache.
