The missus just returned from visiting family in Alabama where she got pulled over for a single burned out bulb tag light, the car has two of them, and got the third degree on ID to include his grandchild my daughter who was not driving.
Maybe Dad is paying attention after all.

Seems southern states are more unfriendly to out of staters. Mississippi and Georgia especially from all the things I've heard. They really don't like us northern folk.

No, we don't. Stay up there.
Planning on it, but your welcome to come this way. We like everyone (except people from Illinois). LOL

Does anyone else remember this movie series on the subject?

Anyone who would give an 83yo woman grief over a license plate bulb has probably done a lot worse to others in their time on the job
From someone who works on cars a lot , marker lights (licence plate lights) are probably the most overlooked lamp to check when checking your lights to see if they are all working. Very easily missed with one out of two working.
Cops know this. They use it as a tool to pull someone over and go fishing.
What are the cops going to do when the bulk of cars are replaced with newer models equipped with LED bulbs with a much , much lower failure rate ?

It's called a pretextual stop. It's a stop based on a legal, but minor, reason, like a license plate light, but the real reason for the stop is to "investigate" (go on a fishing trip) for bigger crimes.
It's how cops stop drug traffickers on the interstate a lot of times. They get a tip (a white honda from california will be hauling50 pounds of fentanyl) and when the white honda goes past, they pull them over for something minor, like following too closely. Then in the course of "casual conversation", the stories don't add up, which turns into probable cause to search the vehicle.

Several years ago, I was at a sportsmen board meeting that took place in a local bar. After the meeting, I was stopped by a highway trooper. He said he stopped me because I was driving erratically. Then, he asked me how much I had had to drink? I truthfully told him one can of Sprite. He asked what was in the Sprite? I told him ice. Next, he did the thing with pen I was to follow with my eyes without moving my head. Apparently not satisfied, he wanted me to do the heal-toe walk. I told him I had poor balance and drunk or sober, I would fail that test.
I asked him if he had one of those things you blow into for me to try? He stared at me for about 10 seconds and asked me when was my last traffic violation? I told him when I was 18, I got a ticket for illegal mufflers. He told me to go sit in my truck while he ran my driver's license. He came back, handed me my license and said I was to watch my driving in the future.
I can't help thinking he saw me come out of a bar and that was the real reason for stopping me. My wife was with me and had no idea of what he considered driving erratically.
Wife: That's the 4th time you've gone back for dessert, doesn't that embarrass you? Me: No, I keep telling them it's for you.

Trapper 7, that's how the local bars around here went out of business , when the big push against drunk driving happened, guys getting pulled over after leaving the bar, losing their license etc., wasn't enough business left to keep the doors open.

absent of any probable cause, I never, asked for the passengers to ID themselves. they arent the one driving. i see this happening more often than not and it is a practice that needs an end put to it. The driver is the one responsible for the vehicle, not the occupants. If the Officers are wearing body cams then their highest ranking Supervisor should be monitoring every video, which means you better be doing so every shift. You cant watch 500 videos a month from every Officer under your command. This should be an easy remedy for a Sup worth a crap. See the wrong behavior, correct and document for future use if it occurs again. You WILL see a pattern over time. Been there for many years. The problem nowadays is that a lot of small Depts either dont have the Body cams or they dont have policy in place to intercept this behavior through video review processes. The volume of videos created, or the lack thereof warrants a call load and activity summary of said Officer(s) to ascertain if they are even doing their sworn duty. If not, document and recommend the proper disciplinary procedures. Get rid of the ones not working, keep the ones actually working in check via video reviews.
I sincerely hate that your family had to go through such BS as it is unacceptable this day in LE anywhere in this country.

City of Albany put in school zone cameras and lowered the speed to 20 MPH.89,000 tickets issued in 4 months @ $50 a pop. Total money-making scam.
We got those here. Some third party out of state company running them. I'm sure they get a huge cut. They've been proven to be running and clicking photos in the middle of the night and during the summer. So bad that several sherriffs want them gone and legislation has passed the state house to trash can them.

I keep one crushed empty beer can in the bed of my truck because I get a laugh from being asked to do a sobriety test every time the troopers want to talk to me. Mostly because they’re always so gung-ho and so certain they’re right, it’s fun to get them all excited about a DUI just to walk straight as an arrow, blow zeroes, and wave as you drive away.

I wouldn't risk it. They'd nail you for open container down here and probably trash the vehicle searching because they thought they smelled something. Once had one do that to me because I flipped a cigarette butt out the window.

Same here, they run 24/7 even when school is closed.
