Most folks that had them around here didn't keep them very long. I don't know why but short lived.

There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

Those things feel like the space shuttle Columbia coming back into atmosphere when you get them over 55mph . Not the hardest thing I worked on ...but they usually always need to have some kinda work done... Funny enough we could almost always find some redneck in a pair of overalls doin a tutorial on YouTube on how to fix whatever was wrong with them laugh o and have fun jumping it off ..I honestly have no clue if you can many Jerry rig one to have a set of slave cables that go from regular to the GI ....or maybe te donut to just work like a regular car...idk

I was interested in having one when they first came out, I got on a waiting list a major seller, waited for half year when they finally had one to show

The place invited all on the list to come to a dinner and look the machine over and put down a holding fee for one, was about 50 of us I guess. So had the dinner, and got up and started to clamor around on it, now my self being in the metal and welding trades I was looking at this machine in a much different light than most, they were looking for highway travel and the newness of having some thing wildly different to other 4 X 4's !

After looking under and over in and out at the structure and how it was hung to together my interest started to lag, so I look at the electrical, and it seem to be done on the Sears and Roebuck side of things, lights with cheap and not near bright enough, seats wear uncomfortable and hardly adjust on metal slides, nothing at that time was electrical adjustment had a radio but nothing fancy, windshield wipers were to short to do a full sweep of glass.

Was bigger than I though as well, more so of the fact that I was used to smaller trucks than even bigger truck rigs, so I let that part slide. Giant tires with a very small jack, look like a problem when out wheeling.

I finally said no and walk out and never looked back, come to watch the repairs on them and they did have metal problems and negative reviews on riding them, motors seemed fine, don't know about the new ones always thought them over priced !!

A lot of police departments had a few given to them by the military. They don't drive them much heard maintaining them got to be a pain and expensive. That said I have been kicking around the Idea of buying some off government liquidation auctions. Probably is the largest amount get sold in California so logistics to get out and look them over for pre auction inspection make it not practical.

I was a mechanic in the Army (and then the Army National Guard) and turned a lot of wrenches on these things. Put a number of miles driving them as well - from jumping sand dunes the desert in Kuwait to busting through hood-high snowdrifts in northern MN. As far as off-road capabilities, they are remarkable.

Maintenance wise, a couple of observations: The most common problem I had to work with was the glow plug controllers would fail semi-frequently. Otherwise, I can't recall a single engine/transmission/transfer case problem. Ever. Oh, a starter here and there. Which need to be shimmed properly. Fun. The front suspension was under-sized for the thing so they kinda eat ball joints and tie rod ends. Brakes are a clever design - the rotors are right on the differentials, not at the hubs.

I would never want one for road use. Not comfy at all, and way too wide. It's one of those toys that I wished I needed. But I don't.

That's why I was never interested. Way too wide to fit many places I go. But if you lived in the desert (what they were designed for) or prairie and weren't going in places with a lot of narrow openings between rocks or dry washes, they were specifically designed to be very stable on sidehills while still having a lot of ground clearance. Western Washington and the way the roads grow in over there, it would be a big no.

They're tough on tie rods, and tires last about 3-4k miles a set. They eat tires up quick. Lots of weight, lots of camber, soft tires=$$.

Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand
