Can anyone tell me how good the black holes that you add to traps work and how they work? I am thinking on trying some this year. Thanks. James

You remove the pan on a 1 1/2 coilspring and add the black hole. I have had some for years and they work well.It is a good economic dog proof trap because you do not need to buy special traps.

It is a pan replacement attachment for a #1-1/2 coil spring trap, converting it to a "dog proof" raccoon trap.

The interior of the cylinder is usually baited with something sweet, attracting the raccoon to investigate the "food" source by reaching inside with its paw, activating the trigger for capture.

Unlike the brand name dedicated, formal, solitary unit dog proof traps that attach and secure the paw from inside the unit, the Black Hole device allows for the trap jaws to clear the cylinder to catch and hold the raccoon.

Seeing how those are $16-$18 a piece and I have the 1 1/2 all ready. If I buy the black hole for $6, a piece and buy 3 doz, thats $216.00, If I buy the Little Grizz thats $612.00 for three doz, A Savings of $396.00, Hmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!! Just thinking out load sorry!

my idea was if in 3 years the coon market is down again, and lets say the rats, fox, mink, etc. are high again you could put your pans back on the 1.5 and trap rats, fox, mink, etc. with the traps that you already have? just another angle

It is a good economic dog proof trap because you do not need to buy special traps.
It does not take much time to change them back. Some may need a little tuning, but nothing major.
I put a piece of sponge inside, give it a shot of fish oil. They work great to set a fence post.Pound a nail in the post, hang the trap on the nail and use a small piece of wire to hold the trap, but not so much as to keep it from pulling out when fired. The coon will need to pull it off and the chain will hold him and the swivels can do their job.

I use a lot of them, they do work similar to the griz and just as effective. Just as simple to get the coon out,if not more so. And as pointed out a lot less expensive....they have been around longer then the griz and the guys who know how to use them swear to them not at them....Tom

ok tom give us the lowdown on the best way to set these,do you bed them like a coyote trap, just pin them down on top of the ground, to me these will shine the most on dry land? ive got a dozen to try this year if they are as good as you say ill add a couple dozen more.

I use a squared piece of heavy wire and push it down over the frame. If the ground is very soft I will use two clips to hold the trap. I do bed them similar to all land sets, just so the coon is not as likely to lift the loose jaw. I have even held the loose jaw in place with a lite rubber-band that I attached to the frame. Then if the loose jaw were lifted it came back down. But if the trap is bedded solidly you will get the coon before it digs the loose jaw free...That is how I have used them... I have about 4 doz, so if you do not like them send em on over...lol. Oh and I got some of P&M grizz baits to use in them this year.. think they will really add to the take..Tom

as said before the black hole leaves the trap able to function as a fox, muskrat, mink trap just by replacing the original pan, what are you going to trap with the lil griz when halfway through this season you can't give a coon hide away?

CS, I respectfully disagree with your "fuzzy math" theory.

It is a matter of an individual's Perception. We all calculate math differently - quantifying and solving for our X's on the side of the equation that best suits our needs within the given reality and circumstances that confront the positive and negative balancing act in the judgment:collateral quotient.

We all own opinions, based on perception and experience, each tempered with budgetary constraints. Decisions always eventually solve for X along mysterious pathways with little argument in the settle. We do the best we can with what we have without the fuzz smothering the X's final answer at the moment.

Jonathan
