We catch skates while halibut fishing, not on purpose though. They claim they are like fake scallops but I don’t really see it. I just throw them back.

pound for pound, nothing pulls harder than a ray. Use to fish for them on purpose just to feel heavy drag. The big ones will make you humble.

I used to, I love the meat on rays and they're not terrible to clean once you do a couple. They are certainly extremely strong. We shot one spear fishing once, that I will never do again and would strongly advise against

Many, many years ago, as a kid, I'd always try to get them in the boat.
But they'd break my line, and even rod a couple times.

The one time I finally got one IN the boat, I couldn't get it out fast enough, lol

not fun to catch on pier lol. youll meet everyone on the pier when you catch one. act like a bluegill when they take the bait then you're off to the races when you set the hook

Years ago i was croaker fishing in the James river in Va. About a half dozen large cobia came by the back of the boat and i launched a cast ahead of them. Instant hookup and a drag pulling battle ensued. I was convinced i had a cobia. After a long battle it was a skate about the size of a car hood lol. I still havent caught a cobia.

Can only imagine trying to pull one in with their flat surface, like a barrel full of water that pulls back. What part of them do you eat?

At the gym someone asked me why I'm sitting on a stationary bike? I'm going downhill, dude. Mind your own business!

We've been invaded with those things last couple years, from basket lid, to car hood size, never had many tears ago, and they devastate the blue crabs, those and the summer dogfish.
Blue crabbing has gone down hill since.

We used to get into big skates long-lining for halibut in Alaska. Some were very large, maybe close to 4' across. Always released them. I did boat one that got hooked by my father-in-law. Was a good 3 footer. Thought he hooked a 100# plus halibut, but when we saw it was a skate, I boated it for a picture then cut it loose.

Just doing what I want now.
