First I can think of is stone cutters. Some of the old bridge abutments around here are just admirable. I never really seen one in disrepair, sometimes most of the bank is gone but they still stand. Nowadays they just rip rap limestone chunks around the prefab walls. Name some others you can think of.

LOL that made me think of those old sock knitters. Can you imagine making socks from scratch? Those machines are very intricate. I cant imagine socks being not cost effective enough to make your own.

I never got into that mess. My older brother about 15 at time, had a guy show him how to take one down. They replaced the knives some parts put it back together. Even though he never did that again that I know of. He was the kinda that probably could have tackled Even later years. My younger brother is also very good at that kind stuff.

Some thing I haven't seen done for years except by maybe Amish. Hand file and sharpen a good finish hand saw. Way back in day when I used pound nails for a living. Was old German cabinet build lived down road from.my parents. Charged me like $2 to file sharpen my hand saws. You didn't whipe the side those blades off with your bare hand. Not less wanted bleed all over you work.

My husband can fix those. He does as we have a JD and an IH. Both are older models.
He started doing because some neighbors wanted them for their horses. He agreed but they had to haul their own bales out.

Maybe skills vs arts:

Wielding an axe to fell and limb a tree and to split wood.

Sharpen a knife on a whetstone.

Shooting moving game. (Now considered poor sportsmanship but folks used to develop this skill).

My profession laying tile i feel is a lost art or maybe most ppl have enough sense to not work that hard lol. The ones mentioning square bale knotter gurus and water dowsing are spot on. Saw dad and grandad get some bent metal clothes hangers many times looking a line

Seppuku (切腹, lit. 'cutting [the] belly'), also called harakiri (腹切り, lit. 'abdomen/belly cutting', a native Japanese kun reading), is a form of Japanese ritualistic suicide by disembowelment. It was originally reserved for samurai in their code of honor, but was also practiced by other Japanese people during the Shōwa era[1][2] (particularly officers near the end of World War II) to restore honor for themselves or for their families.

If it's a New Hollen I can fix the knotters. Somehow word got out that I could fix them so smooth You didn't even have to slow down when you had a knot coming up the baler twine. Did the knives also. Our Ford tractor dealership wasn't to happy with me. My grandpa tough me how to sharpen both a ripping and a crosscut hand saw. When was the last time anyone had to stration a nail out? Frying a gutted scaled fish then getting all the meat off of the bones and ending up with a complete skelton.

Absolutely! I gave instructions to my sprinkler crew last summer. Must have looked funny to all the neighbors watching me lead the crew around the yard like momma duck and her ducklings! LOL

Hopefully I didn’t break the thread. Not my intent.

When is the last time you sharpened your garden spade?
People used to do it all the time, people used to know how to sharpen everything.
It's amazing how much better a sharp shovel works.

I used a scythe to cut weeds under miles of a neighbor’s electric fence when I was in high school. Carried a long whet stone tapered on both ends to refresh the edge every little while. Never heard of peen sharpening. I assume from the name it involves some light hammer work and making a scalloped or somewhat serrated edge?

I put up about a ton of hay every year with one. Scythe, homemade rake, and a fork. Have been for the last eighteen years. When you peen you are drawing the edge out and thinning it. Not trying to scallop it. You want it as straight as possible. If you are good enough you can get the edge so thin that when you run your thumbnail on the underside it will lift and set back down. Only want it that way for good grass. It makes for a keener edge, and you can get more honing on it.

One art that died a very quick death was Hunter Bidens artistic painting career. Coincidently at the same time as his fathers political career.

Knowing how, why, & when to use a 3-4-5 right triangle! This goes hand-in-hand with the lack of ability to read a frigin rule(tape measure) and I don’t mean a slide-rule either!!! How many remember using a slide-rule eh???
