Our club had our annual flintlock "championship" shoot. We each shoot two targets, 5 shots each. One at 25 yards, one at fifty, all offhand. Its fun to see the "part time" flint shooters try to keep up with the guys that shoot flinters all year round. Here's the group we had: ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/05/full-13020-292423-flintlock2026.jpg)

Who was the “champ”?!? Let me guess! Hah! Not me. Pretty sure I came in 2nd. No excuses, but a gusty crosswind doesn't help when you're trying to hold a 42 inch barrel still. The guy 3rd from the right (standing) won, its typically between me and him every year.

No youngsters interested in the old guns? What ashame
Looks like a good time. No, not many at all. We 've got two or three guys pushing 30, they're about the youngest. The average age is at or over 60 for sure. Its a great way to spend a few hours, and not burn up too much $ in ammunition.

I watched some of the final shots at Bloody lake Saturday
both the 1st and second woman were cap-locks
the mens shoot went on a good deal longer the top 4 guys 2 were Rock lock and 2 cap lock I stepped away so I didn't see the end of it.
that wind was coming and going , if you could wait a minute you might catch a lull

K snow, are events like that generally open for the public to come observe? I think my kids would really enjoy something like that. All our club events are open to the public. Come on out and have some fun. I think most clubs are open on monthly type shoots, to encourage new members. If you ever make to my neck of the woods, hit me up and we'll get your kids making some smoke.

Caplocks are an advantage for sure. Flinters are fast when they're tuned and everything is good. But 1 little thing off can cause tiny delays. The wind was gusty by us. I try to wait, but sometimes when I've just about got the "squeeze" done, the wind kicks. Some year I'll make it to Bloody Lake

PF,
I wear my "skins" at every shoot. Most guys only dress up at rendezvous.
Flintlocks can have a steep learning curve for sure. I started with caplocks, and even those can be daunting when you're new. I strongly encourage people interested in traditional muzzleoaders to try to get with a local club, to get guidance and opnions from people who've handled and shot them.
Lots of old guns show evidence of rear sights being moved down a barrel, presumably as the owner's eyes aged.

We shoot the first Sunday of every month.
We host a small rendezvous in July, this year its July 17-19. We are very open to new people, visitors and curious public. We don't really have any demo's, usually no vendors, but we shoot all weekend, have women's and kid's games, and a lot of fun.

Traditional ML shooting is a dying sport unfortunately. When I lived in Paducah Ky we went to a lot of events in Illinois and Missouri. Sometimes I went to 12 or 15 a year. Most were club rendezvous open to the public to raise funds for the club. As the average age of participants increased (with fewer young people coming into the sport) clubs began to fail. The members still interested in participating would join a club close by, but over time there were fewer and fewer clubs. I believe Mo killed a lot of the clubs by increasing the liability insurance required to host an event from $1 million to $2 million. Clubs could no longer make enough money hosting an event with the increased insurance cost. When we moved to Va we found the same situation. The only new folks joining our club were transplants like me or folks from other clubs that had failed.
I think another factor is that a qualify custom or semi-custom rifle has become quite expensive, especially for a young man with a family to support. At the same time Savage and Ruger and others are producing center fire hunting rifles for a fifth of what a quality ML costs. Jim Kibler's kits may change this cost equation for the better.
We need the old guys with young attractive granddaughters to get them interested and going to events, and the young men will follow. Hal's nieces would be a good place to start! I typed something to the efect of doing something to attract young ladies to increas attendance across the board. But I deleted it. Look like im not the only one with the idea. It works for everything else.

Nothing more fun than hanging with like ,kind & Quality folks.

My .32 Kibler SMR gets the most use… I started shooting flintlocks last year for hunting (besides thermal hunting, it’s hard to strap a thermal on a flintlock).
Thanks to your advice K Snow on the krolic rifle I picked up… I’m not sure if it was a blessing or a curse, cause the flintlocks seem to multiply. They do seem to have that tendency for sure. Glad to hear you're hooked.

k snow ......where is your part of Wisconsin ? Is it the area the cheese production is? yes but you are going to have to be more specific , cheese making takes place in a number of places in WI probably fewer counties where it doesn't take place. https://www.milwaukeeindependent.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/WisconsinCheeseMap.pdfthere is a map , you could say he is in the middle of the east coast cheese making region rethink cheese as Wisconsin is the 4th largest cheese producer in the world the US is #1 and would still be number 1 without Wisconsin but it would be much closer. to Germany and France then Wisconsin would be #4 all by it's self and Italy #5

Nearby Plymouth, WI is home ro Sargento Chees, Sartori Cheese, Great Lakes Cheese and Master's Gallery Cheese. 4 of the biggest cheese processors in the country. Cedar Valley Cheese is my personal favorite, near Random Lake.

Im all about food. If my wife is trying to talk me into a trip she will bait me with different places she want to eat along the way and their signature items.
One if the smoke stacks I built had a guy from WI and when he cam back to work on weeks he went home he brought back a lot of cheese. I have always loved cheese and back then I didn't pay attention to types ii was young maybe 24 at the time. . But whatever he was bringing back was very good. I would gain a ton of weight if I make a trip up there.

Any time we travel out of state to visit people, we always bring several pounds of cheese curds (from Gibbsville Cheese) and string (from Cedar Valley). That's the absolute best string cheese in the world, bar none. I'll die on that hill.
Cheese is definitely calorie dense. That string is 100 calories per inch. Between cheese, brats and beer, its no wonder Wisconsin-ites are on the larger side of normal.

Looks like fun, I've always wanted to shoot a flintlock. That random arrangement of benches looks like a recipe for disaster however. The loading benches (tables) are generally in a line. We flip them up against the rail fence between shoots. When we flip them down that's typically where we leave them. Some get moved to flatter, or less muddy areas. There are two shooting benches at the firing line. The red table is the "hot bench" for guns that don't go off. Guns are capped/primed only AT the firing line. Safety is very important to us.

Looks like fun, I've always wanted to shoot a flintlock. That random arrangement of benches looks like a recipe for disaster however. Looks like any shoot I've ever been at. The benches behind the firing line are for loading and cleaning. Walk to the firing line to cap/prime. Let the folks next to you know if you're shooting flint. At small club shoots everyone just keeps an eye on things. At actual matches there is always a range master to ensure safety protocols are followed.

I don't own a flintlock. Have 3 cap guns. A SxS 12 gauge that is fun to hunt birds with. Dog gets impatient while I load it though. A 50 cal kentucky rifle repro I have taken several deer with. A repro remington from pietta cap and ball revolver I have taken one deer with. Tried several BP replacers. Swiss black powder beats them all for consistency.
Never been to a muzzle loader shoot. Dressing up like the old trappers did never interested me. I just like hunting with the tools my ancestors used.
Keep thinking a small caliber flinter would be a lot of fun. Been hearing good things about Kibbler kits.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

I've heard nothing but good to great about those Kibler guns. I have only handled a couple, and they are very nice in the hand. I am not sure how small he goes caliber wise. He does offer a smoothbore too.

Kibler's southern mountain rifle is available down to 32. southern mountain rifleI've handled a couple of these, and they are light and slim, almost delicate. I think they'd be a joy to carry in the squirrel woods.
