If this set works then WHY do we boil our traps? SO what if they have a smell on them. If fox.yotes are caught digging anyway??

with the observations I have made, they dig around the trap and do not get to the bait.
It seems they smelled the bait, however, the speed dip smell was also detected.
The smell from the speed dip, prevented them from digging at the bait directly as they do with clean traps.
rather, they dug AROUND the trap trying to get at the bait, and also dug those trenches in apparent frustration, for not being able to get to the bait.

with dirty, contaminated traps, this set WILL not be effective.

and by contaminated traps, I mean uncleaned.
I clean my traps and place in ziplocks until the set is made, but
I DO NOT use gloves to set traps, let it be known I set bare handed

Shortline, we do not want canines digging at our trap beds, with the exception of this set. And we still need a clean trap because we want them digging right where the scent is coming out of the ground, thats what the stick you use to create a scent channel that comes out at the pan does for you.

Hup, If you don't speed dip your traps do you treat them with something else? Do you wax them at all.
Maybe I am not following you 100%.

Thanks

Greg

I don't speed dip them.
I boil,
dye
and wax em, (sometimes).

two sets come to mind, the ist is a comment by russ carmen. he says if your getting a good amount snow then ALL your traps should be moved as close as possible to the hole, bait,or lure as they step or dig directly at the smell sorce. the 2nd is from johnny thorpe, he digs a hole straight down the size of a post hole digger a foot or so deep, then toss a ripe rat carcuss in the bottom and cover with dirt then put the trap in and cover it also. when done the trap is 4-6 inches below the surface and he catches a ton of reds by both front feet. i believe the set would work

I read the article and thought it was well written. It got me to thinking about the stuff I tried as a kid.As I recall I did try a few of the buried bait sets. They did work ok on fox but I would have a sprung empty trap more often than I had something. The problem wasn't fox they usually worked the set well enough to get caught. The problem was coon and their trap flipping antics. The coon would start feeling around as often as they'd start digging often resulting in a sprung trap.As I said tho I was a kid and I've never tried this set extensively.I may have to tinker around with it a little this upcoming season.

If they don't have this book, they are missing out for this trapping season!! The information is great for all parts of the country! Dobbin's Fox video is a GREAT companion to the book.

I learned so much!!
