My apple tree is loaded with blossoms but no bees here yet. Is that going to be a problem?

I don't know, but the same thing is going on here. Overall it has been cold. No honeybees, only bumbles

We've had a roller coaster ride of poor pollination weather on this side of the lake so I'm guessing youre in the same boat. You must be quite a ways north as I took bees out of apple pollination around 10 days ago. But the weather was so poor during bloom that pollination couldnt have been great. And the king bloom was frosted hard.

Do you normally have many bees show up? Around here apples compete on the front part of bloom with dandelions and on the end with autumn olive. Both of which are substantial draws for honey bees. Even in good flying weather that might also produce nectar, a lone apple tree here likely would see very little bee activity given the other food sources available.

I am in the NW corner of Wisconsin, and usually we have lots of honeybees and bumblebees when the apples are blooming. The only thing working the trees now are hummingbirds and I doubt they will do much. Hopefully the blossoms are still on next week, we are supposed to get up to upper 80s and maybe the bees will be out and about. I have a crabapple that is loaded with blooms too. Dandelions are just now starting to bloom.

We have had very few Carpenter bees, honey bees or brown wasp activity this year as of yet. Our weather I am sure has played a part in this lack of activity. A few late Spring frosts and single nites of freezing temperatures would impact many of them as well if they were exposed to those temps without any shelter.

I have honey bees in everything blooming. There are hives up the road a little over a mile. When the caragana starts to bloom they get thick.

Yep, bees are busy here in tree and in everything that has flowers now. I see a lot today at the ranch.

All kinds of insects to pollinate them besides the bees

I’ve had bees for 53 years. Bees don’t always do what we think they should do. At my camp, I have an orchard, 23 apple trees. I also keep a bee yard there, five hives. Seldom will I see honey bees on my apple trees when they blossom. That’s because they want to work dandelions at that time, which is a far better nectar and pollen source. The fruit trees have lots of bumblebees and smaller native bees to pollinate them.

Depends - is it a self pollinating variety?

Here in the southern U.P. our apple trees haven't bloomed yet.A couple of days in the 60's,most daytime temps in the 40's -50's with night temps in the 30's,A couple of nights ago it was 30 exactly.Dandelions just popped up.My bees don't seem to have in interest in swarming yet

I dont think it is, because when I planted it I was told to plant a crab apple close by.

A lot of times they recommend a different variety tree for “best” pollination - even with self pollinating trees. You MAY still get a crop

Was wondering the same thing here in Northern MN. Our wild blueberries are blooming and no bees around. I've never seen, or noticed this many blossoms, but it seems early for here.

I know we should have a boat load of wild choke cherries this year. My big cherry trees were choked full of blossoms until our last storm and winds. Should be lots of food for the coon and opossums.

Talked to an orchard owner today with several thousand trees. The orchard is in eastern WI. He stated they had one of the best bloom years they have ever had but with all of our cool and cold nights bee activity has been slow and late. He is hoping that pollination has been good but is very cautious.

I would think there’s quite a few bee colonies up your way. Lots of big commercial outfits chasing star thistle honey around in that country. But they often don’t migrate into that area much before mid summer when thistle is really rolling along and there’s fairly warm weather. Also might be hard for a garden spot to pull bees in once they’ve keyed in on the thistle as it’s a pretty heavy nectar source more often than not

Crisis averted. Temps well over 80 today and bees everywhere. Working the blueberries like it's their job.

They are late but I have never seen this many Bumble Bees. They are everywhere! All of the apple trees with white blossoms are bloomed and the reds and pinks are only a couple of days behind. The apples are LOADED with blossoms this year and so are the pincherries and blueberries. It may be a tough year for the bear hunters. I slept with the windows open last night and the whole house smelled like apple blossoms this morning.........until I fried bacon.

The small Miner bee pollinates more than honey bees. The Miner bee goes out earlier in cooler mornings and stays out later in day.
