I have two questions:

1) Here in my neck of the woods, coastal CT, 12-18 inch eels are a common bait for big striped bass. We generally throw the dead ones out. Has anyone ever used eels for a trapping bait?

2) This is my 100th post. What do I win?

In my neck of the woods you can't beat eels for for mink and coons, and otters here love them I heard they used to wire an eel in a brook with traps on both side, also have an under water cage with live eels in one end and a 220 in the other for otters I never done these though so I can't comment on that but real good bait for mink and coon, also use them to make sun rendered fish oil

When you fish a dead eel for bass you need to break all the vertebra in it's back by bending it back on itself along it's length. When you do this, it is very supple on the end or your line, and when you move it through the water it looks alive. Now if you take one of these broken dead eels, and wire it in a river or creek by the nose, I can see how it would look like a live, swimming eel. The nice thing about the eels I'm talking about, is that they are very hardy and will live for days in either salt or fresh water. I think it would make a great bait for otter, coon, mink, and maybe even fox if it's placed very shallow. That cage method also sounds good. I bet you could do that even with live fish, like a big yellow carp or some goldfish.

I still need to know where to pick up my prize!

Some of the best bait I used was eel from Kishels. My dogs would dig for weeks for them and the coyotes loved it too. Unfortunately they dont carry it any more. I would be interested in getting some and adding bait solution to them to see if that would work.

Not sure but I think Cronks used to sell eel bait(chunk). You can use the eel live or chop it up like chunk bait. I never used but buddy used to order some every year until he decided he didn't need it anymore.

I used eel this year for mink and coon, cut into chunks. It worked excellent and even managed to take two fisher on it. It seems to last forever as bait.

We used to catch eels back in Maryland....ugly and tough!!
I'd say they are real good bait....Hawbaker used to sell them as a put up coon and mink bait.
