I believe you can use vinegar to remove the zinc. How long do you soak the washers and is there a better way. Removing the zinc to weld to rebar stakes. Any information is greatly apprieciated.
thanks
kevin

I just clamp them to the stake and weld them as they are. The very first bit of the weld will spatter a bit, but the zinc will burn off ahead of the weld and it will hold just fine. If it were airplane parts, I'd put more effort into it, but for stakes, clamp and burn will do just fine... wink

kevin go to the hardwarestore and get some muriatic acid.
string up the washers on craft wire and soak them in a plastic bucket.you can brush the acid on with a natural brisal brush to the end of the rebar or soak the end in the bucket.be sure to do this outside because of the fumes during the etching and don't forget the safty glasses

Kevin, galvanized plating flashes-off at around 700°F. If you're concerned about getting sick from welding galvanizing, just string the washers on a piece of #9 wire or something similar and toss them in a bonfire or wood stove and burn the galvanizing off that way. As with welding, just stay upwind while they flash-off. Pretty simple!!

Why not buy unplated washers to begin with?

Farm stores local ones and TSC , Atwoods sell nuts bolts and washers by the pound , a lot cheaper place to purchase your needs.
