A buddy and I went for a hike along Lake Michigan's western shore (WI) last night. Un like Michigan's side, we have little to no beach....just shear cliffs with ground water runnoff. Needless to say...the beginning and end of our little excursion was the most challenging/exciting.

Was a good after work activity.

stopped for a fire and coffee on the ice shelf

We had the subzero temps for a while but then it was in the 50s a day last week.

The ice can change quick. One day it will go out quite a distance and the next be all broken up. It makes for some really cool ice forms such as ice "volcanoes" and "mountains".

Nice... Be careful of Lake Michigan it's no joke, I almost drowned in it when I was a kid.

Apparently we(Michiganders) got the vacation side with the beaches.

Its a long shore line for sure. Further up north, above Muskegon its more rocky.

Then you run into Harbor Springs area. $$$$$$$$$$$

You got that right! All the sand we keep dumping to sustain our beaches on this side gets washed away and donated to Michigan beaches.

Here's a shot of the same area during the summer showing the thin strip of gravel beach. This time of year its easy walking though and the ice is probably 5 feet thick from the waves lapping against the shelf.
