Many of the USA's pioneers traveled across the ocean and then the wilderness to claim a homestead. Many of us here like to think we're made of the same grit, the same entrepreneurial spirit.

Well....Russia is giving you that chance.

So what would it take for you to grab some pure freedom and stake out your little bit of paradise in eastern Russia?

Heck, I would look into it. Probably not the best idea though, I am probably past the age where I should be trying to start from nothing and make a living.

I read the NYT article... Too many restrictions for me.

Guess I'll wait. Lol

Bad deal!!! Only 2 1/2 acres. In that climate hard to sustain a family.

Once we whip Russia in the upcoming Syria battle royale and it becomes New America the plot alotment may to up to 5 acres, but property tax will be 12,000 a year. Plus Home owners association fees.

This is why we should have let General Patton proceed to Moscow as he requested !

You could survive on that but not thrive. I'm sure the surrounding land is dirt cheap. Wouldn't be too terribly hard to buy more. Maybe bring a wife or two with you and each one can get their own acreage.

Imagine all the vast wilderness available to you for hunting and trapping.

This reminds me of a story of the local radical Finns here in the late 1920's early 1930's. They were staunch communists and there were enough to win a majority on the township board, or nearly so. They became disillusioned with capitalism and moved to Western Soviet Union near Finland. Stalin came to power and they stopped writing letters. Presumably they all got snuffed out digging the white sea canal as prisoners in the Gulag. Oh well, commie dummies.

For a young person it might be inviting. The amount of land wouldn't entice me to make the move.

Alaska has OC land and sales on land all most all the time. The land is very reasonable I would consider that option first.

You couldn't do much on the land available here. You'd need to sit on a sack of fertilizer in order to raise an umbrella !!

Might grow a few muskrats though

for the cost of a flight to Russia , you could buy 2.5 acers in the UP or more

I had a lot in Ontanogan the roads were laid out on the plot to the lot but not cut but the next road over was cut so clearing the trees on the road location would not have been to hard. it was 1 acre the school taxes on it cam to about 65 dollars a year , it was gifted to me , I sold it for 100 dollars in 2006 after paying taxes on it from 1999 to 2006. if a fella wanted to live up there they could for about what it would cost to move you and your stuff to russia.

You could not survive over time on 2 1/2 acres, cost of animal/supply shipping, bartering with neighbors and your competing with anyone else for the same animals you are hunting and trapping meaning farther traveling for survival.
The idea of homesteading is NOT to have neighbors that close. NO Neighbors=Happy Homesteader

Most of the regions shown on the map are some of the best quality sable areas in the world.

IDK....dachas are much smaller (1/8 of an acre) and they produce lots of produce for the families. Heck...an Irish farmer was able to support his large Irish family on less than an acre potato plot. grin
