I am looking for the same deal. I have tried an echo gas powered drill, an echo post hole drill everything works well in fresh fall soil. But once she freezes it’s a no go... I have been looking at the new 1 7/8 rotary drills from DeWalt that coupled with a carbide 3 inch Drill bit May just be the ticket? But just running a straight drill gas or electric I can’t get much more then a mouse hole. I think the hammer function of the rotary drill will solve the cutting of the frozen ground. Any one has the answer I would love to hear if. Hard to beat a deep showy dirt hole for production trapping. Plus the dirt ya dig out of the hole saves dragging dirt around.
Good luck! God bless, Dustin

I went a different route. I go to the pawn shop and buy a well-used drill every other year. It's gonna get nasty and I am going to throw it around everywhere so I never wanted to bring along somein fancy. As far as augers - the f&t one has held up well.

I have a Dewalt with 20v Ion packs. Have a 2" auger bit. Works great and makes them quick

Ldw, when is gets frozen rock hard let me know how it works out. I could never get the “trapping” augers to do anything in frozen soil. Single or double flute. https://littlebeaverstore.com/store/blad...BSABEgJLEvD_BwEI mounted one of these to a regular hex shaft to use with a drill for making trap beds in frozen soil. It worked Ok but I needed mor drill them what I had. A cordless sds max may be just the ticket? Won’t be trapping this year because of my flight training. But looking forward to next year hitting it hard. God Bless Dustin

I have a Dewalt, chordless,SDS Plus, rotary hammer and it's a great tool that saves a lot of time and lets me chisel trap beds when a 4 lb,digging hammer won't make a dirt.I haven't been able to get dirt augers to work in flint hard, frozen ground, regardless. It just sits there and spins. Instead,I use a 1" masonry drill to make mouse holes. The largest I can find for the SDS Plus,is 1 1/8".If I could get one in 1 1/2",I'd pay whatever it cost and that would be my auger. They do make 1 1/2" masonry bits for SDS Max tools.
I use the augers as long as I can but here in Montana, when the sub zero temperatures settle in,the augers just don't work.Imagine concrete hard dirt, with rocks all through it.When the ground is not frozen, the auger can kick some of those rocks loose. When frozen, they can't budge and the auger just spins.

I use a couple Milwaukee 18 volt 1/2” hammer drills with a few different bits. Make sure that you use a side handle to control the torque in case it his something solid. It can easily auger dirt holes and pre-drill stake holes. I use a 2” and 3” dirt auger for dirt holes. Ship auger bits for thawed soft ground staking. Carbide masonry bits for frozen hard ground staking. Large carbide masonry bit for drilling out trap beds and for making a frozen ground dirt hole.
To easily remove cable stakes, use an auger bit and drill down along the side of the cable. Be cautious to not wrap the cable in the bit.
The ship auger bits are from harbor freight - it doesn’t take much to drill thawed soft ground. All of the carbide masonry bits are either 18” or 21” and made by Bosch. They cut very well and last a long time. They are very expensive to buy, but they are the best.
I would like to have the new Milwaukee rotary hammer. It would do all the above, plus chisel out trap beds.
Make sure that you charge the batteries each night so you start each day with fully charged batteries. When it is very cold, keeping the batteries warm helps them last longer.
Drilling everything possible saves tremendous wear and tear on my aching wrists and shoulders. And it speeds up the process.
Look up more info on this topic by Taximan. He is the expert on this. Apparently, he and I posted at about the same time.

A 12 volt inverter can be bought for less then 50.00 bucks at most truck stops. I used one on the road to charge Oregon 40 volt cordless batteries at my last job. You could charge out of your truck with no issues
God bless,
Dustin
