I want to get my dad a Muskie lure for his trip to Canada this year. He says he wants to focus on catching a big Muskie this year, I guess there are a lot of them in the lake he fishes.

He's putting together some tackle and I want to get him a lure for Father's Day.

So what's the latest trend in Muskie lures? He just bought one called a Trident or some such. It's an in-line spinner with a three lobed blade.

I've gone to Canada lots of times Muskie fishing, and this was on my line more than anything else.

Center one was the ticket!

When I have clients north of the border the go to has always been a large but not huge black bucktail bait with a bright silver spinner.
Good no matter the weather, deadly once you learn to troll it.

An old hand crank telephone. You have to get the crank ratio down good on the retrieve.

Just kidding folks, it sure would be a hec of a trip to come up there and fish for those rascals. I can still remember reading about Muskie fishing in sports afield and field and stream in the early 70's. Still have those old magazines at my parents house. One other critter I was always intrigued with were Canadian geese. Shot three in Ks 17-18 years ago. Got one mounted like I had wanted to do for a long time.

Good luck on yalls Muskie fishing and be safe out there.

X2 on the bondy baits. They are deadly here in the Detroit river.
Personally, I troll a rapala J13 and have good success on musky along with a mixed bag of smallmouth and walleye too.

Just happy to be here.

No Muskie up here in AK, but those Bondy Baits are killer on big lake trout and pike. For pike I’ve fished similar to how they are used for musky. Drifting and jigging in very very slow to slow moving 10-20 ft deep channels in wetlands as well as in deeper (10-40 ft) rivers. Killer spots to find the biggest of the big pike. For lakers, drifting and jigging in lakes. My favorites are the Bondy original and the mini wobbler in pearl or white (favorite colors), chartreuse, and walleye/burbot colors. I think the flash and vibration of the spinner blade on tail helps attract fish and the rubber body gets fish to hang onto the lure longer and hit it multiple times. They are heavy, so a stout rod, reel and line is needed. The heavy weight gets them down deep fast and keeps the presentation vertical even if the boat is being pushed by wind or current. Fun to fish for sure. Pike and laker strikes on jigs are almost always really solid hard aggressive hits.

Jake's, grandma's, and husky jerks are working for us right now here. Note the broken hook, tooth marks, and other battle scars on this one.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

woo hoo looks like fun. I see you use a snap, have you tried a TA angler clip? I’ve had hard hitting blues and stripers actually open the snap during a strike. Bad enough dropping the fish even worse when the $25 plug goes with them! Lol

You can't go wrong with a cowgirl unless he has every size and color already. Maybe downsize a little because the twin 10s will kill your arms and shoulders.

Tell where he is going which would help with the selection a lot.

He goes to Canada, somewhere not too far north of Minnesota. I don't know the name of the lake. He says its famous for Muskie but he usually fishes for pike and walleye. But this year he's gonna go after a Muskellunge.

If this is the first time targeting Musky I would stick with different color/size/blade(s) bucktails. Bucktails have fooled more esox than any other bait out there. Not as hard on the pocketbook either.

Okay that could be one of about 1,000 lakes. I would go with double bladed bucktails. Some big baits you need specialty rods for, such as the bulldawg. If he has a heavy action bass rod, he can probably fish a bait with up to twin #9 blades in about two ounces or less. Anything larger than that he is not going to be happy unless he has a special muskie rod for the situation.

Thing is if you knew the lake I could recommend colors based on water clarity and forage fish.
