Ok, I will be honest and come right out and say I have very limited knowledge of GPS systems and I could use some help. I plan on getting into some different woods here and maybe out of state. Just as a back up, I thought I would get a backtracker type unit in case I got turned around. Now, I may be hunting with dogs as well. So is there dog tracker type units for the collars that will do both and are easy to use? In other words, if I'm with or without dogs can I set waypoints and find my way out if I should need it?

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

Yes on both garmin and sportdog. Both have track and train systems (1 collar 1 handheld) can track numerous dogs you can set way points. Both priced the same butgarmin has the upper hand. More accessories better maps.
I use mine to mark my sets when in a new area

I have a garmin 320 , it's a great tool for keeping track of hound's and knowing where your at . That being said, take a compass with you also because they can and do mess up sometimes . Also take lots of spare batteries .

X2

In fact I can't even answer your question ......lol

I do have a hand held gps thingy with the private property , forest service , BLM chip download to keep me from crossing the wrong fences and staying a step ahead of rancher shenanigans .

I do have an excellent sence of direction so I don't use or rely on the tracking/backtracking way point feature or any other features that seem foreign to me .......lol

Yes for basic functions. If you get something like astro it will come with 1 yr of Birdseye for free. Gives you very accurate property info

X2 Rick extra batteries or truck charger

What kind to ya have Gov? And I am usually good at getting back out to the truck. But lol, there have been a few times in new woods and the dogs are treeing one after another and I get excited and forget where I am. Then I was like, oh crap. grin

Those astro's seem nice adam, but wow, pricey! Don't they still make the ones with the big metal antennas that go, beep beep. grin

They are pricey but pay for themselves quickly. You can get used Astros and dc systems all over.

Yes they still have telemetry systems but it doesn't do much especially if you want waypoints.

I originally bought the sportdog tek 1.0 tt system before they upgraded to the tek 2.0 & garmin came out with their tt system.
I put off the purchase of any tracking system because of $$$. Once my dog took off 2 miles down the mountain after a bear, I decided to buy one. Seeing how the tek had both worlds in one system and was cheaper it was a no brainer. Still have it and use it once in awhile.

I have Garmin 320's and a new Garmin TT15.
I run them every day. Can't live without them. And, I can see no draw back in them.

The new garmins are nice. I still have the old Wildlife 64 box and antenna that goes beep beeps but have not used it in a few years with the dogs I have now. Last winter I road around with some coyote dog guys and they run it all on their laptops and can see exactly where there dogs are. They had all the satellite imagery overlaid and the landowner maps as well so they could see exactly the location and who owned the land the dogs were on. All this flowed while they sat in their trucks with their computers plugged in the trucks.

Just make sure you aren't putting a $400 collar on a $40 dog

Gotta live up to the nickname...

It's hard to believe what these things can do now. Regular GPS, knowing where and what your dog is doing, knowing property owners, marking trap locations, and so on. The price though, is a humdinger! I appreciate all the replies!! Do y'all think I could find a good used set, that maybe someone is upgrading?

Thanks for all your help adam! Looks I got some research and shopping to do lol. One thing that I noticed is with the astro system you have the GPS unit it's self and with that dogtra, they go through your cellphone. I don't know, but I would think getting calls on your phone while your hunting would be a pain, ?.

I would lean towards Garmin products as they have excellent support and generally speak English

Don't do anything you don't want to explain to the paramedics. I do appreciate a good story tho.
