What's the best kind of blacktop driveway sealer...maybe something at Menards or Fleet Farm? I'm hoping to buy some sealer while in Marshfield this weekend.

I used this 2 years ago, and it didn't hold worth a crap (I put it on in late September so maybe I did it too close to winter): https://www.theisens.com/products/drive-maxx-700-filler-and-sealer/2740342/
I don't know, I cleaned the driveway ahead of time & I used 1 of those special 'brooms' to apply it. Weather was good, but this kind didn't work for me.

Buy buckets of "Premium" sealer at any Cheapo Depot, and cut it 25% with water, apply with a "Squee Gee", not a brush. It also comes with sand added for those slick spots for traction.

Call a reputable contractor in your area and buy it from them. Bucket products for homeowners are useless.

How many buckets you need?

Eight 5 gallon pails.

I was wondering about brush vs squegie.

Depending on surface porosity . In general, I would recommend a brush application.

If your driveway is under a tree canopy do it early in the season. Tree pitch is challenging on sealcoats. Also late September is a poor time to seal cool nights and high dew points effect curing.

Do some really get 8 years out of those pails that say they are rated 8 years?

I had a guy do my 300 ft. Two years ago and he did a decent job. Used something called gator back on the bad places???? I had several quotes. Always asked why not do the tar and chat. They all said "you don't want that". The state does a lot of highways in it. Any ideas???

8 years, not likely

Scout, chip and seal is a notoriously dirty application although it has gotten much cleaner and is now even used inside some cities. Set up and application make it too expensive for small jobs. Better off considering an asphalt overlay.

Be careful who you use as a Contractor. Stay away from the seasonal gypsies and do not fall for their sales pitches. They ripped my 84 year old father off along with other elderly couples in my town. I found them. Turned them into the police. Got a lawyer and took them to court. They got fined $100 and left town. I hope?

They actually did one single little old lady's driveway who had the beginning of dementia. They went back a collector payment 3 times off her.

I havn't heard of the gator stuff.

Part of the hard part is getting the big cracks to hold up once filled. I've used the caulk type tubes with limited success.

Don't buy the cheap stuff, son in law did, it traveled into the house and discolored their white carpet, started right away, also it wore off and tracked in more later

WR Meadows makes a 3405 cold pour that is the best cold pour I have ever seen. We use hot rubber. It’s the best type of cracksealant.

The gator back, gator skin or whatever it's called was only used on the bad cracks. It's way more expensive than the coal tar sealer. It's held up good. But when I scrape snow some of the sealer comes off as well.

Yep, that snow scraping seems really hard on sealant.

I did 1/2 the driveway a month ago. The stuff from Menards seems better than Blackjack. I have an interesting issue on the other 1/2...pinepitch. Drops of it are all over the driveway. I wonder how to remove it prior to sealing...
