You suppose they are walking on thin I e and call through and can't find the hole they went in? I can't think of any other logical explanation.

Many years ago I found a moose frozen in to the Nowitna. Figured he crossed during ice up and died and current took it down to where I was crossing the river regularly. February when I finally figured out why there were always fox and raven tracks there. Was able to get about half of it out with a full days of chopping and having the dog team pull on it. Left the other half there.
