In some cases you can funnel the skunks into a multi catch cage set up or fence it off with several single catch traps so you will have a positive catch set up. You will only catch what comes out of the den and nothing else. Then bait isnt as critical.

There arent many baits or lures that are 100% specie specific only. Curiosity, odor, eye appeal and opportunity are too hard for most animals not to investigate to some degree.Domestic or feral cats are among those animals as well. Forced trapping is best in some applications.

I have been using a tree berry bait along with fruit loops. This has been the best for me so far. I have caught lots of cats in my egg traps when I used marshmallows and a mixture of vanilla extract and jelly. If a cat is hungry enough it will go for the fruit baits also.

You guys must have some starving cats. I've got a cat job going and they're so well fed I'm having a heck of a time.

Hey Paul ever think of trying a live mouse? Might give em' something to investigate rather than eat. Curiosity killed the cat! HAHA!

Bob Jameson hit on the nail head. Exclude the cats if at all possible.

Ok guys, help me out please. An ADC man I am NOT! But a friend has a skunk problem. Not sure the extent but I told him I would come set a couple cage traps tomorrow. I do have a syringe pole and that stuff.

Area is not city but there are neighbors so not really sticks either. I have trapped skunks in coil springs before but not cages. Do you just set the bait on the bottom of the cage in the back or should I suspend it from the top or does it matter?

Do you guys cut wires off cages in order to create a few spots that make it easier to get the syringe in? I would be more than grateful if anyone could PM me with some tips.

Thanks for your time

As far as baiting and visuals I do and would suggest you do both types that you described. One for ground access attention and some elevated for good presentation visually and apply some bait to this material( marshmallows are good visuals) as well for better wind dispersal.Flavored popcorn makes for a good trailing scent/visual material in a pinch in the front of the cage trailing into the back.

Also if it is an under a deck or shed type situation as far as the skunk burrow I would suggest to set so it is a positive directional catch. Only catch what is coming out type of set up.Use wire or boards as guiding, fencing or blocking.

If it is a random skunk coming into the yard from other areas you are best to gang set with the wind working for you using your lure/bait as best you can with good wind assistance.

Try to find the property access/grubbing areas and set those up. When possible use guides and fenceing in some places or take advantage of the natural barrier guides that are existing in terms of landscape, shrubs, walls, foundation travel edges etc to funnel the skunk. In open setting be prepared to catch other animals.

As far as removal or euthanizing on site that is your decision. If the wire isnt large enough for your set up syringe to go thru the wire then it might be a good idea for you to cut out a couple of access points in the wire. Top, sides and rear. It is best to find a syringe and material set up that fits thru your wire then to cut them. I had to do that years ago to help in poling the skunks thru the wire also when I was a green horn.

Some just tip the trap on end and pole down thru the top of the trap with the door open also. What ever works best for you.

It is usually a good idea to cover each trap with a tarp, trash bag or what ever to help keep the skunk calm prior to your arrival to dispatch.
