I have a 500 acre farm I've been trapping for 10 years and have had great success on coyotes. This year I put in multiple sets at proven locations the last week of December.

So far ive only caught one red and 2 coons. Two other sets were worked but traps were frozen in. All sets were freeze proofed last week and nothing has been touched.

Usually I see sign along the dirt road but not this year. With our colder that usual temps/full moon im starting to think they're holding tight to the creek bottoms.
Anyone ever seen this behavior before?

Currently there is 16 sets out, a mixture of dh, flat sets, scent post and pipe sets. I relured when the traps were rebedded and all checks are from a moving truck.

I suggest mixing things up. Try making some sets at unproven locations, maybe with different looks and different lures. I am of the opinion that coyote see their brethren caught and remember to some extent from prior years. A coyote on a small trail in the brush seems to me to be less cautious than one on a main travel way.

Then again, something may have changed somewhere miles away to draw coyote away from that farm.

Don't scratch the head too much Brett,it can lead to large "rubbed" areas-I can tell you.

I located them the other night and had 2 females and 1 male responding from the bottoms.
There is more variety of sets on that farm than a flea market

Please teach me how to tell sex of a coyote from its tracks. I've always wanted to learn that.

Not from tracks from using the fox pro .
By using the sexed calls on the fox pro usually distinguishing males from females and old from young isn't hard to do.

The males have 'vibram' in their tracks! Thought everyone knew that.

So, help me get a new wrinkle in my brain....

How do you tell sex of a coyote by its howl or even by seeing one from a distance?

I know how to sex them when they have been perforated and I lift one of their hind legs and look.

Ground check, all our calling is done at night .

Not saying it's a perfect science but according to our data log , 81% of the time we've been able to " sex a dog".
This means by using a "female vocal" on the caller, we killed a female on that stand. Or mainly during mating season using "male vocals" we killed a male during a stand. Sometimes with multiples coming in it's hard to tell which dog we were talking to but hey it's not a exact science.

Once again not saying it's a scientific study but it works for us. We've found if we can get the older females out of a area the rest of the young and males are a breeze.
Therefore the first few times we hit a area we use all female vocals trying to challenge the alpha female in a area. If we take a older female the first time out our success rate usually stays high.

When we first started calling years ago mainly distress calls were used and yes we took our fair share of predators. Very quickly we noticed that after hitting a place 2 or 3 times sightings just fell off. Now coyote vocals is 95% of what we use and it works for us.

I didn't know female-male specific coyote vocal recordings were available. I'm learning something here...I was being a bit of a smart butt earlier but now you have my attention. My predator calling experience is limited. Only been a few times.

I'm telling you swamp if your every up this way stop in and we'll show you an unforgettable experience. I've talked to some yotes for two hours ,knowing they weren't going to come in, but to hear the emotions they express is amazing.

My favorite is catching a alpha female with older pups. You can hear the pups whining just begging for the females permission to see what all the fuss is about. If the female senses something amiss you can hear threats in her bark ,almost like a mom warning her kids of the dangers of smoking.

Since I started calling my respect for Coyotes has increased tenfold

Very interesting!! I’m not a big time caller, but it is like getting the old trap digging yote out of the area.
