Launched at this spring's North American Fur & Fashion Exhibition in Montreal, the Beautifully Canadian label and Fur is Green campaign went global last month in Russia and are to hit China in November.
"We're also exploring western Europe," Alan Herscovici, executive vice-president of the Fur Council, said in an interview.
"There are two main thrusts," Herscovici said of the campaign. "To reassure consumers it's perfectly OK to wear fur, and that fur is different and exciting now, not like grandma's old fur coat."
The million-dollar Fur is Green campaign touts fur as the ultimate eco-clothing because it's renewable, durable, long-lasting, reusable, recyclable and biodegradable, as well as energy-and resource-efficient.
Herscovici emphasized the industry is regulated and no endangered animals are used.
The provincial and federal governments support the initiative because more than 80 per cent of Canadian-made fur apparel is made in Montreal.
The fur trade contributes about $800 million to the national economy, including close to $400 million in exports.
"The Quebec government is proud to support this important export strategy that is opening new markets for our wonderfully creative fur manufacturers," Raymond Bachand, minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade, said when he participated in the Sept. 18 launch of the Beautifully Canadian label in Moscow. He was on a trade mission through Russia to promote the province's expertise in fur, transportation, infrastructure and energy.
The Moscow event was held at a store run by Montreal high-fashion fur designer Zuki Balaila of Zuki Internationale Inc. His boutique promotes creations by other top Canadian fur designers such as Montreal's Argiriou Furs Inc. and Jean Crisan Furs.
"Russian consumers have always appreciated beautiful furs, making Russia one of the world's most important markets today," said Richard H., a Paris-based fashion trends analyst and forecaster hired by the Fur Council as artistic director for the collections.
Betty Balaila, president of the non-profit Fur Trade Development Institute, said the new label "identifies exquisite fur apparel and accessories made only in Canada by top Canadian fur designers in their own ateliers."
"The Beautifully Canadian story is all about the heritage, craftsmanship and ecological values of Canadian-made furs," marketing director Teresa Eloy said.
