I have a few remaining older cage traps with a heavy steel plate door that I use for raccoons on Animal Damage jobs. They are great. I need to get more, but cannot find out who made them, or where to buy them. From memory, they are 12 x 12 x 36. They are simple, reliable, and catch raccoons without misfires.

Can someone tell me a source?

Thanks!

Havahart traps have and had metal closure doors.

One source of the Havahart 1079 is WCS- http://www.wildlifecontrolsupplies.com/animal/NWS1079.html. The 1079 is 32"L X 10"W X 12"H.

Here is a picture of two old models of the 1079. The trap with the heavy screen door is probably more than 30 years old. The traps with the metal doors are at least 20 years old. They are still in use.

Note to self- Engage brain before opening mouth (or hitting the ENTER key/SUBMIT button).

Great photo! Good traps can last a long time.

The few that I have remaining with the steel plate door are more than 20 years old. The door is made from steel plate about 1/8" thick. It bumps in stragglers.

Is this a gravity door or spring?

Gravity door. No spring necessary.

We have been known to purchase the old 1079 with the screen door. When Havahart realized that they actually made a decent cage, they changed the style immediately. The new ones with the solid door we don't have to buy. Customers have given us a bunch. For a while, Havahart actually had a plain solid door that a strong raccoon could twist and let himself out. I thought those were really special.

Wondering why there is a need for a sheet metal door? Some are not heavy duty. There are many traps with escape proof wire mesh doors that are plenty strong, much stronger than some solid metal doors that as Paul mentions could be twisted, bent and would allow a coon to escape. Its not just the door material in the door, but how the door is hinged and constructed that is important. Most traps still have clipped hinges that can break free over time. Others have quarter inch rod wrapped around quarter inch rod. Some wire panels are clipped with 15 gage clips, some metal bands and or 12 gage clips, while others have wire mesh that is welded to quarter inch framing. Lock bars can be flimsy. I have seen pictures of coon twisting doors where the lock bars were cheesy. Though a gravity door trap works, gravity traps should be longer, larger, to prevent back outs as animals can beat the door. With powered doors, much shorter traps can be utilized to do the same job as a longer gravity trap, take up less space in the truck and are easier to place because they are smaller. When skunks are trapped, metal or plastic covers will keep them from spraying, protect bait and can used in positive sets to catch denning animals coming or going from under sheds, porches or under fences.
