Poor mans trophy room or lodge

Poor mans trophy room or lodge - 11/21/17 05:44 AM

Since I've been battling an injury this hunting season, which has kept me from doing a whole lot in the outdoors I've been playing around with my home trying to make it look like a hunting lodge....this is the start....now no real trophy whitetails but lots of good memories(found out I suck at trophy hunting), mostly all bow kills on stateland or junk farms....

Looking for some good lodge type ideas to finish my lodge...
Fishing, trapping, or what ever you might have pictures of on how you have done your trophy lodge rooms....
Also looking for a vintage crow mount to put in the branch....

Looks great! I've got to decorate the front porch but don't laugh to much yet it's 26' x 60' and I hope to fill it with all sorts of fun stuff ha ha

Re: Poor mans trophy room or lodge - 11/21/17 10:51 AM

My trophy room is 14X27
I have every rack I've shot mounted, even spikes
Now that Lyme has damaged my memory I am glad that I do, I wrote a name on the back of every plaque, that reminds me of the hunt. One us "tractor" which reminds me that the nieghbor's was brush-hogging his field just 50 yards away when that buck came to me

And lots of pictures
Fish and turkeys

Re: Poor mans trophy room or lodge - 11/21/17 10:59 AM

Just installed new entry door and new flooring
And some shed antlers, and skulls found

Have been trying to figure out for the past few years how to display more fur, think I got it figured out but it involves holes in my solid wood doors so hesitating to do it

Bee hive is on my list, I've been searching, want put it up in the tree above the antlers.

Snowshoes is a most, I want a unique set, some day I'll find them....

Traps are going up for sure, have some vintage trapping catalogs, like Hudson Bay and others....
Have my furs just need to get them tanned....

Michigan trappin, great job...

Any more ideas?

A few wall hanger furs for sure. But what might look really cool? Find an old Coleman lantern, and wire it as a hanging light fixture to replace the one in the picture?

Re: Poor mans trophy room or lodge - 11/21/17 05:01 PM

You need some fur in that room. I took an old weathered board drilled a few holes in it, placed short pieces of dowel rod and hung some furs on it.

Make yourself a Rustic Bench. Place between the window & corner. 5 pieces of firewood equals a poor man's bench. That will give you something else to do...lol.

This is something different if you can find one. Bears leave their calling cards on trees to make their presence known. I found one on a friends property and turned it into a lamp. Shade courtesy of the local Amish. The claw marks are clearly visible and there is still hair trapped in the bark.

Re: Poor mans trophy room or lodge - 11/22/17 03:49 PM

This will be interesting as I'm also in the middle of doing a room. Two things I'm looking for is one different ways to trim the window and two is a ceiling light. Don't like any bought ones so far. I'm leaning at making my own. Say maybe a old minnow bucket. This is another room we did this summer. Fake beams. It is a living room-kitchen area.

Thanks! I looked for one of these for a long, long time and eventually stumbled onto one when I was out looking for places to put bear baits. This one broke the ice because I've found several since.

I want to thank you guys for being so welcoming to a new poster. You've all been great. I had to pass a background check more stringent than the military requires in order to post here. Just kidding, but Paul wanted to make sure he wasn't letting an anti in here. I completely understand that.

My “poor mans trophy room” is about six feet by 3 feet by 3 feet. Well one of them is. I have three and try to keep them full all the time.

Re: Poor mans trophy room or lodge - 11/22/17 06:41 PM

My All Purpose Boy has a cool "Bear Tree" on his property. It's an old Beech that has claw scars from several generations of bears. It is mostly hollow and will topple one of these first days. We hope to save a section of the trunk to put in his man-room, which is basically his entire log home. If he changes his mind I will save it to somehow display in my place.

Re: Poor mans trophy room or lodge - 11/22/17 06:51 PM

Here is a lamp I made for my All Purpose Girl. Crap! I can't rotate the darn things!

At any rate, it was made from a beaver log that I dredged up somewhere.

I did the trim around the window myself. They are all beaver chews from my sister's property. It took almost 2 months start to finish.

Thanks! To bad I won't have it much longer. My wife is pregnant with our 3rd, so that is gonna be our new daughters room. We have two boys already (10 and 12) and we were hoping for a girl. Well, our wish came true, then I was informed that I'd be loosing my hunting room. So, I informed her that either our bedroom or the living room would be my new hunting roomgrin.

Every "den" needs something like this. There are over 400 bacula in this "coffee table" from 16 species. Took several years to accumulate all the parts. Table is quaking aspen (trembling aspen).

The Bears in this area like to scratch up on power line poles where they can find them. I'm pretty certain if I whack one of those down for cabin decor I'm going to get an unwanted visit from upset people.

pcr and Bruce (and others)... I really like the "cluttered" look. Seriously. In my opinion, there should be virtually no wall showing, with every square inch telling another story or providing a memory. Well done!

Jack

Like the table.
Finally get to see some aspen used in furniture. I would expect it is easy to work with?
None of the mills I have asked do anything with it except chip it for pulp wood. I have been tempted to spend the time riving some into boards with wedges and a froe to give it a try. I've got some nice clear trembling and big tooth aspen growing a couple places on my land.
Any tricks to working it? does it warp a lot, plane fuzzy, etc... I have lots of other kinds of wood but have always wondered about aspen.
Posted By: Gulo

Re: Poor mans trophy room or lodge - 11/23/17 04:26 PM

gryhkl. Aspen is one of the few "hardwoods" I have available to mill. Unfortunately, very soft wood. On the other hand, colors can be fantastic. Too, it doesn't seem to "yellow" with age, like everything else that I have in this country. For this table, the aspen was milled, then stacked and stickered for 3 years in a garage, then planed and used. Of course, very stable after that much time. I really like the stuff, and the whites, blacks, and reds are beautiful. No planing fuzz, no warp/cup/twist.

If you are talking about the painting (small House) that has those horns hanging beside it? That is a painting I had done of my grandpa/grandma homesteaded house. The framing of that picture is from the trim of that old home. No power no running water they lived there till very late in life.
Posted By: Outlaw99

Re: Poor mans trophy room or lodge - 04/17/18 02:42 AM

That is a great piece of art. I have a similar picture of the house my great grand dad was born in, but it’s just a photo, shortly before it was gone. Your painting looks so close. Amazing work by the artist.

Re: Poor mans trophy room or lodge - 04/17/18 02:52 AM

I kind of always cherished that picture and the wood frame came from the trim of that old house. It had 3 rooms and they raised 7 children but not sure how. Some hard times in those years. LOL

This also was painted from a photo.
