458 socom vs 450 bushmaster anyone own one???? - 01/02/18 02:12 AM

I cant decide if I should go with a Wilson .458 Socom upper or a .450 Bushmaster (Bushmaster) upper to go with my last completed lower AR-15. I am wanting to go with a big bore for the last one.

I have three in 5.56, one in 300 Blackout, one AR-10 308. I am wanting to hunt with it and have some fun shooting a big bore AR. I also reload my own ammo.

Anyone own one or have any comments or like to share anything???

I don't own either because I can hardly afford to buy miracle whip over mayonnaise, but from what I've read the .458 ammo is much much more expensive. Since you reload that may negate that difference somewhat. If I had the money I would buy the .458 and put a suppressor on it just for the fun of it.

got a 458, awesome rifle, basically a mid level 45/70 in an AR shoots .458 bullets over the .452 pistol bullets in the bushy

more ammo choices for 458 socom. they picked that caliber to use the bullets from a 45/70. you can get bullets from 200 to 600 grains if you load your own.

This guy I know just built a 458 socom. I have yet to see him shoot it. It is a beauty
The downside is ammo is expensive but since you reload it might not be so bad.

I have a 450B and a suppressor for it. You will have very few factory ammo options, but I reload also and it works out. I got the 450 because it fell into the straight wall requirements for deer hunting in my area. The gun has never given me issues. Accuracy can be good depending on your gun and load. Reloading can have some nuances depending on the crimp or other things you want to accomplish. Has worked well for me on northern deer and southern hogs. I’d say look at your reloading material for both rounds and decide what you wana accomplish. The 450 is not as easy to load subsonic and get it to cycle.

Good luck

I have a Rock River.458 socom. I have had it for several years. I have never fired a factory round through it. All reloads. I have a Larue scope mount with a good Leupold scope on it. Very accurate. It drops deer in their tracks. Great hog gun too. I bought a big box of brass when I got the gun.

Ya - gona be about the same or worse for the 458. Funny the uppers are so much and then a cheap lower just adds 150 or so. About 4/5ths of your cost can be you upper before optics.

Since you reload you could also consider the 45 raptor.

If you have a Winchester model 70 in a 264 winmag I will trade you my gun brass and scope mount dies and brass. For several years here in Indiana we could not use a centerfire rifle. Only pistol cartridge rifles were legal. Now we can use centerfire rifles for deer.

i reload for my buddies wilson upper 458 socom. We had good results with 325gr hornady ftx (i think it was ftx's) probably a 2 inch group at 100 if i remember. Plenty accurate enough for hunting. He had some 500 gr cast lead bullets to try from missouri bullet co. We had poor accuracy results from them. That thing kicks hard though. i would compare it to a 12g shooting slugs. If i came across an upper at the right price i would own one myself. Reloading your own is the only option to afford to shoot it much.

I have a 458 socom 16” built with all tromix components. I have never shot a factory load through it. I primarily load the 325 fix and the 300 jhp Hornady. Both shot under an 1-1/2” at 100 yards. I just changed my seating plug because I was seeing some variability in seating depth with the ftx which I think was causing some accuracy issues as the jhp was shooting better than the ftx. I have taken 3 sheep/goats and a couple of hogs with it on an annual trip that I take to a hunting preserve with some old friends. All dropped like they were hit with a hammer. I also like the fact that the bullets are interchangeable with my 45/70. As far as power it is not a 45/70, but a fun gun to shoot. The recoil is mild(some places I have read on the internet complain about recoil). I did have issues with the Vortex Diamondback scope 2-8 that I had mounted on it twice the reticle rotated in it. Vortex stood behind it both times and replaced it with an upgraded diamondback 3-12.

Own 458 socum, Tromix components also, plus their case gauge. Load all my rounds, Lil Gun powder, 300 Rem hollow points, 325 Hornady FX. My rifle is also very accurate shoots 1 '' groups 100 yds. Vortex Strike Fire scope. This weapon is a hoot to shot, mild recoil. 2 hogs, 1 white tail, and acre of melons. Hogs/deer went down just as garymc stated, no having to track.
