reading the rx insert - 01/18/18 03:16 PM

How many on here read the insert on your rx's?
I read the one that came with my new rx. The very first warning is: it (the rx) can cause very bad health problems and death.

My wife is a nurse she reads all of them and the doesn't take the meds . I throw them away and when something doesn't seem right I read it next month when I get it refilled.

In the sue happy society that we live in they have to cover their butt. If a particular medicine helped 999 people and just one person had some bad side effects, they have to list what they were or be liable.

I never did till I was taking some pain meds for a couple of ruptured disc's, the pain was getting worse and I was crawling upstairs every 5 minutes to pee. My daughter read the insert and said "Ah Daddy? The warnings say might cause back pain and frequent urination." Arrrrg.

Tommie that's awesome. I know several nurses like that. That's part of the reason I don't get the flu vaccine.
CH I agree and can understand if death was towards the bottom of the warning but to be in the first sentence makes you wonder.
That stinks Team V.
HarleyDparts Yup I've noticed that too. Most rx's say they are "x" issue but the side effects are what it's supposed to be treating. My last rx was that way.

If you had read first, would you have known that you were the exception?

Point is those inserts are there to escape liability, Not for our information. I've read a bunch of them and all the sides listed seem to be listed for most Rxs, all the listings are for "possible" effects not "known" effects or "probable" effects.

If you don't trust your Dr; save time and money by not going to him/her. If you think drugs are dangerous, don't ask for or accept scripts for them. Staying away from Drs and drugs will benefit all your fellow humans that don't have to wait in line behind you.
Thanks for this.

Re: reading the rx insert - 01/18/18 06:15 PM

Years ago, I once was prescribed Erythromycin and Seldane. It was either for Bronchitis or a Sinus infection. I remember sitting on the couch, watching the TV; and my Heart started racing and pounding. Thought I was going to have a Heart Attack !! A couple of years later, they took Seldane off the Market , because the combination of those to drugs CAN cause a Heart Attack.

Re: reading the rx insert - 01/18/18 06:26 PM

Tjm go ahead and eat them prescription up . What I was saying is what I learned from my ordeal is I don't trust the doc any more because win I got screwed up they had no clue how to handle it . Went to every doc in this town and they had no clue what to do . Legs turn black all tendens ruptured in my legs , arms and left eye and anxietyhe level is through the roof and lost 43 pounds in 40 days .

What I learned is read insert and see if there is any thing that will do the same job with out as many bad side affects .

What I took was cypro antibiotic if you get time type in cypro poising and you will see I am not the only one it has screwed thousand and it is a black box drug so you can't sue .

Hopefully you are behind me in line some day and I make you wait .

Re: reading the rx insert - 01/18/18 06:55 PM

But my inserts don't mention alternative remedies?

Would you have known?

Yeah, I know going to Drs can be hazardous to your health, one almost killed me with a sulfa drug after being told multiple times about my allergy.
Upside though his surgery was fine.

Tjm,

I know what you mean, and after reading all five pages I know that any thing that happens to me in the next year may/might/possibly be a result of that med. What I don't know is that any of the possible things will happen. And having read the five pages that came with other med they have nearly all the same exact "possible" sides. Oh and the stuff that came in the mail the next day had almost the same list.

I'm not saying "don't read them things", I'm saying that "after you read them things you will know just what you did before you read them".
My asthma meds "may cause asthma"; well, hey they may help my asthma too.

Bottom line is don't go to any Dr that you don't trust with your life, and, take a list of question with you when do go, to ask the Dr about "possible" vs "probable" vs "very likely" sides.

The fine print is from the lawyers, it ain't about the medicine, translated and summerized it says "YOU CAN"T SUE US!! nananaya "

Like any other product you buy, lawsuits are figured into the cost of the drug...

They crunch the numbers and figure a drug will kill/harm X number of users and average out the settlements and figure it into the cost.

If it's more dangerous to more people they just charge more for it.

Yes cipro can be a rough antibody. I didn't have nothing near what you experienced but I had a lot of Peripheral neuropathy wile taking it and quit ( no lasting effects ). Told the dr I was seeing at the time and he said I was crazy . Needles to say but I fired him shortly after .

You know you are in trouble when you have to take one pill to counteract the side effects from another one. Right now I have so many pills to take that it is hard to keep everything strait. I will say what everything I take now works for what it is intended. It has taken a long time to get there though with starting and quitting just as many.

Every insert warns about sexual side effects.

Re: reading the rx insert - 01/18/18 09:51 PM

Mike not only the lawsuits but everyone's profit.
Holy cow I looked up the cost of this rx and the pharmacy I use (Savon), was the cheapest while walmart and Walgreens were the most expensive. CVS was in the middle
I'm thankful for insurance

Isn't it funny how the phrase, "more than 4 hours" is now part of our collective vocabulary?

Interesting thing "the blue pill" was/is a rx for low blood pressure. The 4 hr side effect was such a good thing it caught everyone's attention.

Early on in my health insurance career I had a member who was mad because we wouldn't pay for more than 8 pills for the month. That's when I learned the real reason for the rx. So his rx's were paid. I am sure he was happy happy happy

If I want to read that much small print, I'll buy a miniature bible. It won't take as long to read and it will have more truth to it.
