Mink in a 330

Mink in a 330 - 02/19/18 03:36 AM

I caught my first mink today and it was in a 330 meant for beaver! I was completely stunned because I never imagined a mink would trip the trigger of a 330 when he could have easily went around it. Anybody else ever caught a mink in a 330?

I caught a mink once in a 330,set dry on a dam crossover. The mink was dragging a muskrat he had just killed up the crossover, when he triggered the 330.I wound up with a mink pelt and a rat pelt.I figured a mink would avoid the trigger on a big trap like that set dry,but because he was dragging the rat,he wound up firing the trap.
Animals generally don't try to avoid trigger wires on any submerged trap when they are swimming.
Gotta love the surprize catches on the line-nice catch.

No I haven't, but I caught a six inch minnow in a 1.5 long spring used in front of a pocket set.

I think the biggest handful I ever had was a gobbler in an MB550. That sucker near beat me to death before I got him out. Luckily he didn't have 2" hooks.

I'm caught a couple of mink in bottom edge 330's set for otter. Triggers on the bottom IMHO increase the odds of catching rats and mink both.

Caught a bob cat In 330 It died with a hen mallard clutched in It's jaws.
Was checking some chuck sets one day. And I saw a grass snake striking out of a chuck hole. Couldn't figure how I could have caught a snake In a 160. Pulled on the snake and it came out in the mouth of a very large mink that was caught In the 160.

One of the largest buck Mink I ever caught was in a 330 set at a bottom edge set. I believe it was caught only minutes before I checked the trap too. I'd spudded out another 330 about 8-10 yards away, and I believe he was spooked by the rukus and swam into the other trap then. My reason for thinking Id just caught him were two fold.....he was limp as a noodle (no rigor mortis), and when I walked up to the frozen-in set to spud it out, all I could smell was Mink musk wafting up through the ice! He was 27 inches from tip to tip whole. I think I still have his pelt in the freezer because I skun him to mount. Now that I'm retired and living the life of the idle rich, I guess I should mount it. It was caught about 10 years ago too (it is very well wrapped)!!

I have caught 10-12 mink in my life. Never one on purpose all in 330's while beaver trapping. About 50/50 castor mounds to dam crossovers

Yeah, about 3 or 4 years ago, I caught a big buck mink in a Belisle 330 at a beaver/otter crossing. The triggers were on the bottom and the trap was probably half or two thirds submerged.

Ive caught lots of mink in 330s. 9 times out of 10 they trigger the trap by pulling the bait out.

I have caught several in 330s over the years, never on purpose, just an extra. Used to get several rats each year also, when we had some rats.

I've caught mink in under ice in beaver bank den entrances. Also caught a few in half submerged 330's at castor mounds.

Many times, especially after cleaning out a beaver hut. Mink hunting muskrats or just exploring.

Yes, have caught mink in 330's. We have some pretty big ranch mink on the loose here. Also have caught several mink that triggered the trap with a large trout in their mouth!

Re: Mink in a 330 - 02/19/18 04:12 PM

I've probably caught more mink in 330's and 280's than in any other trap. All set on crossovers. I can pile up the mink when I want to but with today's prices I haven't bothered. Did pick up a big female two days ago in a 330 belisle.

My biggest surprise was a MOLE in a 330, still puzzled over that one.

Mink are easy to catch in a coni underwater. I believe they grab the trigger or hit it with their back foot when swimming. Same can't be said when you stick that coni on land.

I've caught some pretty crazy things in a 330, but never a mink. I've gotten lots of muskrats, a couple northern pike, even caught a cormorant once.
