Some of my finished fur - 02/23/18 01:35 PM

I thought I would put a few pictures up of some worked fur. I had a great season this year and had the best numbers in the least amount of days ever. I thank God for it all....

Here are a few doubles.

5x

4x

3x

I had 55% over 4x and 95% over 3x. These coon were caught after December 15th until the 28th. I then went on a coyote bender for two weeks and then finished up the season on coon. Hope you enjoy. These are headed for Helsinki. LLL

Have you ever seen the movie "ground hog day" with Bill Murray? It seems that way daily during the seasons and seasons turn into the same thing over and over as well Beav. Only so many ways to stack coon you know. lol, LLL

I think LLL and Dave both stand out as exceptional trappers, and both do a great job on their put-up. Shows what a LOT of hard work and determination can get you. Trapping is the best therapy.

Re: Some of my finished fur - 02/23/18 07:46 PM

Larry, it appears you are cutting the front legs really short. That would sure make things easier. No problem on the paycheck?
Posted By: The Beav

Re: Some of my finished fur - 02/23/18 07:52 PM

I know what It takes to put up large numbers of fur. I haven't trapped 1000s like these guys have but I've skinned scraped and boarded as many and maybe more. That's why I mentioned the therapist thing. LOL
It would be smart If they were farming out some of this put up work. I know I put up lots of coon for big numbers guys.

I think my best year was somewhere around 500 coon. ROW trapping

Re: Some of my finished fur - 02/23/18 08:07 PM

The front legs look just like the coon I sent to NAFA for Monday. 15% made the first page of western north central, including the top lot.

Re: Some of my finished fur - 02/23/18 08:14 PM

Cut them short like that before you start fleshing and It's a lot easier getting them clean.

Re: Some of my finished fur - 02/24/18 02:57 AM

LLL what would be the rough average date of catch on your coons? The pelt side are very prime so I was just wondering what the catch time would be. What are the range in dates of catch like starting and ending.
I did not trap many coons this year but I have noticed even with our cold spells we have not had much snow and the coons here did not den up near as much, as early as some years or as long so those laying along the road now don't look too bad for nearly March 1st. Our season ended February 15th.

These are mid to late season. They will be all over the place on grades I believe. There are some good and there are some late. These were caught from Dec.15-27th and then the 15th of January through the 30th. LLL

I have plenty of seasons left if the Lord is willing. So does Dave.

I will be trapping until the day I die if I have my say in it.
here is what I was doing for a couple weeks during January I will post pics of them soon. Still have a few to finish.

Re: Some of my finished fur - 02/24/18 04:09 PM

LL- I'm curious as to what types of sets/traps you use to consistently catch that many coon. I want to hit them hard next year (just to see what kind of numbers I can get) and you definitely have a little knowledge when it comes to coon trapping! Do you use footholds, DP's and conibears? Snares? Multiple types of sets or streamlined like a lot of longliner? Any specific locations that you look for? Thanks for any info, and great job on a great season!

Im glad many people think like you Larry...you know how many moles we caught last season...we averaged $59.22 a mole and moles were almost 1/3 of our gross revenue last year.

I am glad you found your calling. This was about fur and trapping of fur. That is why I started the post. Maybe you could start a mole to millionaire thread. I would look at it after I am done working fur. Maybe a video or something?? LLL

You have never had me sling mud on you. I just do not see the relevance of you catching some moles on a finished fur thread. If you feel that you want relevance please start your own thread. Here is a great place for that thread....

Well yea, "put bait here, set trap in front' or "set trap in coon trail" I think everyone is on board with that as far as know how. What hardly anyone wants to do is the 14 hour days for weeks on end like he is doing. Not to mention the prep work and marketing afterwards.

Re: Some of my finished fur - 02/25/18 04:38 PM

What some fail to realize is coon is the staple in the midwest. Go after 300 coyote at 30 is only $9,000. 2,000 coon at just $8 is $16,000. The check is what matters when it is all said and done.We can talk hours and put up and all of that, the $$$ is what matters.I doubt very few in the grand scheme of things done $16,000 comparing coyote to coon in the midwest.

wow...childish to call someone a bozo Larry and also a lil childish to call people your pundits. At one time i am sure you were one as well, just like i have been before. I have never hated what you do bud...i have always given you credit for your hard work and catchin coon. I will stick by my statement that you aren't a wolfer. A true wolfer traps coyotes all season...that just ain't you bud. You are a cooner like dave plueger. Oh and i never once said "you don't know how to catch coyotes"...will give ya $100 cash if you can produce in one of my posts on here or iowatrapperstalk.com where i said those words.

never said you don't work hard at what you do...it is amazing how you only see anything negative i have said about ya but totally miss the praise you receive from me.

see Larry...you are a mudslinger too. that "free FUR trapper" was mud thrown right at me...so i guess we are in a dual with mud...works for me. I will be working in mud all week this week plantin traps...my work is just starting.

amen...biggest catch on coon for me is 35 in one day and had em skinned by midnight...was so thankful the next day when only had 16. the most i have skinned in a 3 day period was 79 in 1998. Just don't have the desire to do it again. These guys got me whipped in about a 1/3 day of checking traps throughout the season. Happy for em.

To run a long fur line it is work, work, work...there is no other word that goes into it. Takes a committment to be away from your family and any other part of your life for a few weeks day in and day out. with a supportive family like these guys have, they can do it and they do...do it. My busy time of year is just starting this week and i will be out 10 hour plus days mon-fri and sometimes sat. i work that way from end of feb through mid december. my play time is when these guys are in their flat out work time. A man just has to have time to get away and relax a lil. That is why i haven't hit the fur hard in last 2-3 years. I do enough just to keep the fire going and then i live through the young guys i teach here and their successes and failures.
