Re: Nafa sale today!! - 02/26/18 02:40 PM

I have 20 3XL I rats that need to bring more than the 6 dollars I could have got from Groenwolds truck, we shall see. I have 14 same grade at the Fur Harvesters sale next week, split my rat catch between them, 140 total. I only live 25 miles from the receiving depots, have not trapped much in years, so want to see how it shakes out between them.

Hey Terry what does this new heading In the catalog mean? "Raccoon Supplement"

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 02/26/18 05:11 PM

The raccoon supplement is 5 large string lots. Most likely added at the last minute by some big dealer that has a lot of pull with NAFA.

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 02/26/18 10:31 PM

In the past, there have been 2 types of top lots.

1 for the buyers. Just one top lot for the sale. Always in the eastern section. Almost always the first lot of XXL

For the sellers, there are multiple top lots

Eastern, XXL
Western, XXL
Eastern , XL
Western, XL
Eastern Large
Etc.

Sellers top lots are based solely on price. Most money paid in that section.

That could be the highest price coon in North America this year. Well done. I got stuck with a $18.33 avg including what didn't sell, minus commission of course. So $17 and change. I am sure I could have got that anywhere. NOT

Update My bought back XX coon sold for 17 kicking me up to $22.33 average before commission.

This is just my opinion take it for what its worth: If you had an $18.83 average selling more at $17 would lower that average. Just my arithmetic yours might be different.

Eb, my understanding is he originally added the unsold coon to his average with a value of $0. Hence when he added the $17 coon it raised his average.

The OP probably needs to clarify but it sounds like his first avg. was total sale amount divided by the total quantity sent whether they sold or not. In other words, zero value for the unsold.

So when they sold PT and that amount was added to the total value but the quantity remained the same, the average would increase.

NAFA seems to be selling ranch mink differently than last year. They are offering by size, not grade. For example instead of offering grade Golds in all sizes, they are offering size 4XO in all grades. Interestink!

Best I can tell #1 females ( a big chunk of the brown females) are down 10 to 20% from May.

Bobcat and marten and fisher later in the week.

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 02/28/18 07:36 PM

To the best of my knowledge, the only way to figure a true sale average at NAFA would be to sit down with a calculator and the catalog and crunch the number your self. That would be a monumental task.

And even then it would not be a true sale average because PT sales, if any, would not be included. And even though coyotes sold well, there were a few buybacks, which potentially have sold PT.

NAFA has never been known to publish true sale averages. It is almost always by section. And it states on their reports that averages are off fresh sundry owner Section I goods.

Agree. They even have some funny to me math calculations on our account page. They give us an overall avg per pelt sold. Who cares what this number is when you have multiple species involved. Makes no sense to me but somebody in NAFA must think it is important.

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 02/28/18 08:06 PM

I don't care what the sale average is, I don't care what the total pelt average is, heck I don't care what my average is. I care about the amount of the check. I was pleased.

Ok thank you

Not really hard to do. I just copies the Eastern 7 pages of sales into a spread sheet. Wrote a few formulas and here it is.

I did not include 515 bought backs. They will sell at some point and IMO averaging in @ $0.00 is not accurate.

13558 Eastern Grade coyotes sold at $32.44 average.

$31.25 if you include the 515 bought backs.

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 02/28/18 09:10 PM

I skinned every coyote that I caught this year except for three that had mange and 1 that was missing fur on his shoulders. I had a couple of pink bellies in the mix that some hunters dropped off. I shipped 21 to NAFA and all were listed as semi heavies. I did not top them off nor was I that selective in the process. I figured a coyote from start to board takes me about 30 minutes so even $20 coyotes are worth my time. I topped out at the sale with two $78 dog. My low was $33. My average before commission was $60.43. I have 23 more coyotes in the shop and you can bet your can they are getting shipped on Saturday. NAFA rocks! laugh

Darn, I missed those that should not have been shipped. I'll add them in just to see. Can't find any med/sm easterns. In Maine the smallest is normally an XL, except for maybe 1 in 10 pups that grade smaller.

A total of 20,441 Easterns were sold a NAFA on 27 Feb 18 @ an average of $22.16

This includes 6883 damaged pelts that averaged $1.91

I personally would never ship a damaged coyote fur.

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/01/18 04:42 PM

Looks like another poor ranch mink year.

2016 $32 average (USDA)
2017 $35 average
2018 Somewhere between the two ( looks like )

How long can they keep doing this when break even is around $35 dollar average for mink farms? crazy
Posted By: Kansas Rook

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/01/18 04:47 PM

Being from Kansas and watching 1000's of farmers continue to farm at below break even costs. I would say they could do it for 50- more years or so.

Do mink farmers get the same kickbacks?
Posted By: bblwi

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/01/18 05:14 PM

There are no subsidies for mink ranchers.
As to the question how long will they continue to produce and lose money each year? That really depends upon each ranch situation.
If you have 10 million invested in a medium sized ranch and due to the fact that there are no subsidies and that lenders are very cautious with such industries there may well be significant equity in the ranch and also savings etc. That means that if I sell 40K of mink per year and lose $6 a mink I will probably go at this for a while because divesting in the ranch during a low business cycle will cost them more than losing a quarter of a million per year. Also if they are US ranchers they have very good mink and they may be averaging in 40's which may be break even for them and they hope to hold out until numbers dwindle and prices rise. They have gone through as many if not more of these cycles than most trappers have so they know the drill.

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/01/18 05:28 PM

Bryce if you are losing $6 a mink wouldn't it be smart to at least decrease production?

FYI those are USDA numbers for U.S. producers.

Ever heard of a government subsidy to farmers? Most dont have to make a profit to keep going when the government sends them a welfare check annually.
Posted By: Gary Benson

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/01/18 05:47 PM

The Govt. takes control of the grain, controls the world grain market, and uses grain as a political weapon against other countries. They don't do that with fur.

Well the last time ranch mink prices collapsed (and took us with them) was '97. It took 7 years to recover. Mink production basically never changed, but 25% or so of the farmers disappeared. What do we got 3 more years?

Yeah I am from Kansas so I am familiar with subsidies. I am also familiar as some of you may not be as to who gets them. Big corps and huge farmers profit from subsidies. Small farmers, which is he majority of folks in Kansas, do not. However, they still get jammed with $3 a bushel corn and crop insurance to protect it. Funny how people outside of the farming world think folks are getting welfare. That statement at best shows a lack of understanding and at worst just makes you stupid.

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/01/18 07:42 PM

Absolutely it would be smart to reduce production, but that will probably add overhead costs on the mink you raise. One will be able to reduce the lower end of your price structure and thus raise your average. Most of the ranchers I know have and are doing this right now. There will be expansions by some of the vary solvent ranchers as breeding stock and used equipment etc. will be purchased for a song so tumbling prices creates opportunity for those that are successful. Many very good surviving ranches around us capitalized on the down times and really grew. There will always be those that will hang on doing the same thing until they can't anymore, just like any business.
Those with little or no debt will make that decision for themselves and those with more debt will have someone else make that decision for them.
I worked with 2-4 ranchers that had sizable ag loans and was able to get some handle on how the business runs in general but also by individuals. As in all businesses there are owners who love ranching mink but don't understand finances and in a time when the market is about bigger and more investment the poorer you are at managing money the less likely you will be successful. As these ranches expand to very large sizes like 250k pelted per year or more working with employees becomes a critical skill set and some just can't get that.

Actually, a $2400.00 cat doesn't look that much different than a $1425.00 cat.

For the extra thousand dollars, the buyer gets extra perks, free advertising and a super cool plaque to hang in his/hers office.

The buyers are waiting to see how low they can get them for and hoping they can buy them for the reserve price private treaty. Easy to see when you watch the auction. If someone offers the reserve price during the auction it starts the bidding war because I think they all have the same idea. This definitely needs to be fixed.

I agree, it is obvious they are hoping to shop in the clearance room. They don't want competition getting a deal though so they bid up if a bid gets thrown lol

NAFA speak
Posted By: wallfur

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/02/18 02:46 AM

yeah seen that but if you look at catalog.....that's not the numbers I get...hardly any "B" colored cats sold. in the first 100 lots which are the top cats 52 lots sold and 48 lots bought back....then prices get real bad from there.

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/02/18 03:16 AM

I used to listen to Radio Moscow on the short wave back in the eighties. NAFA can be very similar.

NAFA has been spinning results this whole sale.

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/02/18 03:49 AM

I am not seeing the 378 average on western cats, they need to post a true average of what sold at auction and private treaty imo

Yep and I already see they are getting the reaction they hope for. More fur headed to Canada eh?

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/02/18 04:51 AM

They also claim heavy coyotes are up over 20%. Well a year ago the heavy coyote at nafa avgeraged $2 more. The July sale for heavy was 16% less then this week. Which would be expected of a July collection since it would be the worst collection of the season

What is going on today
Posted By: wissmiss

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/02/18 04:06 PM

Ranch mink, then sable/marten, then ranch fox.

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/02/18 04:10 PM

Looks like the mink sale is going to need some creative analysis. I hope marten don't.

They got extra creative with the Marten. 10% or so of the Semis are XXL and averaged somewhere around $80. The XLs averaged $56.74( maybe 25%) the LGs averaged $36.65 65% or so of the offering.

The semis overall average is higher than the XL's at $57.58. smile

Lots of resistance this morning; only the biggest & best. Heavy emphasis on biggest, 4-0,3-0. Mins are tight though.

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/04/18 12:05 AM

In general were the ranch mink prices considered poor at this sale?
Posted By: gibb

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/04/18 12:47 AM

Overall OK, but clearances were tough, nobody is really making money at these levels. In fact most are losing money. Males in most cases above production cost but females mainly below.
Still a lot of mink to be sold in the world this year.
Mink99 would give us a better perspective.

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/04/18 01:01 AM

Why does their report say 1.1 million mink sold at premium prices then?

Because today they sold the black mink today which are regarded as the best ranch mink in the world.
My comment is about the overall sale, which started last Monday and will finish tomorrow. Some colors had a lot rougher ride with less than 100% clearances.
Overall NAFA offered 4.2 million mink this week plus the wild fur.

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/04/18 02:39 AM

Gibb that makes sense. I didn’t know that’s why I asked thanks for clearing that up.
Posted By: mink99

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/04/18 03:58 AM

Gibb is prettty much spot on. Basically if you had big mink of good quality a rancher did okay though they are probably still in the red.

The black males seem to be at the same levels of last February and the black females a little higher. The black top lots were out of this world. I wish the top lot selection was like wild fur and everybody had a chance instead of just one rancher getting the majority of the top lots. Lots of politics in the ranch mink industry.

Overall the prices are okay but need to be higher and there were more buybacks this sale than last year. I have to say, to me, the Kopenhagen sale was a little better as they had fewer buybacks. But their mink are bigger and that makes a huge difference.

Re: Nafa sale today!! - 03/04/18 05:44 PM

So if a Blackgamma Size 1 female 1 SN averages $42.66 in Feb 2017 and then averages $37.36 in March 2018 that is an increase (premium)?

or if nap average is $27.72,$36.83, $27.14,$20.12 for 1X,1,2,3 naps in 2017 then $25.19, $31.42, $23.73, $18.20 in 2018 prices are up?

I will ask, my quick answer would be in the 30 to 35 dollar range know that they are in the lower end of the collection but I could easily be wrong. I am going by my marten that are in the southern end of the range which averaged $37 vs my marten from further north which averaged $55.I don't have the big Northern type like in Alaska.

PT sales will be closed off in a couple of days for this sale, but continue up until the next auction. Once a skin has been auctioned and BB it is on the PT catalogue until the next sale.
