Nice work.

I like the tripod setup.

Do you scan with the light on the gun? Or do you use a headlamp to scan?

Haha thanks everybody!
If you haven't tried it yet I suggest you find some coyotes and try to kill'em it can be allot of fun!

These coyotes were shot on an outfitters leased deer properties to try and control some predators so prime pelts were of no concern on my part, Although I would say atleast 4 of them had great hides on them as of yet and one of them was terribly mangy

For the guys who had questions on my tripod / light setup and ect heres what I'm running
The tri-pod is a Nightstalker edition with a pig saddle clamp on top

Night stalker tri-pod (check it out)

As far as my scope and scanning to locate these coyotes I have recently switched to NightVision & Thermal gear.. I haven't really seen an increase in coyotes committing to the call although I never did try and over hunt my properties when I was running lights, As I believe a coyote will become educated very fast if he has been shot at while their is a red beam shining around!
What I have noticed is less people interrupting my setups under the assumption that I am spotlighting deer!

And you also asked If I used to scan with a headlamp or my kill light on thee rifle & I mainly scanned with my head lamp and kept a slight beam of light on them as I transitioned to my rifle and then dropped the main beam of light onto them as I readied for the shot!

As always any coyote that comes into the field and leaves alive is now smarter then he was, Make your shots count grin grin

Re: Best weekend of coyote calling to date - 03/13/18 04:45 AM

You're allowed to shoot at night with a high-power rifle with a light...? Not here. Landowner and 1 guest can use light with shotgun or .22 rimfire if I can recall correctly.

Re: Best weekend of coyote calling to date - 03/13/18 02:19 PM

Haha thanks fella's
Tactical 2.0 I would love to have another 8 dog weekend grin

NonPCfed yes Ohio and quite a few other states have legal night hunting with rifles & lights, night vision or thermal..
I believe to hunt on public land here in Ohio its Rimfire or shotgun only for most of the year, Most likely to prevent poachers from having the simple "Were coyote hunting"

And bucksnbears .. No we do not have any snow and I am not complaining about it at all smirk

Good job by you and awesome set up. I’m still a headlamp and scope/shotgun light guy for fox, but getting more into the coyotes and definitely want to step up to thermal or night vision. Again great job!!

Re: Best weekend of coyote calling to date - 03/13/18 09:14 PM

Thank you.. yes I do miss them red eyes bouncing across the fields but it’s so nice not having people ruin your setups because they think your spotlighting deer

Re: Best weekend of coyote calling to date - 03/13/18 09:29 PM

Way to go, you're continuing to put the smack-down on them yotes, very impressive!

And, as I said in your last post, very nice set up.

How many did you kill last year?

You got a good start on them this year!

Re: Best weekend of coyote calling to date - 03/13/18 09:53 PM

Thank you lugnut,
We ended 2017 with about 33-34 coyotes and have 18 of them since 2018
Posted By: NonPCfed

Re: Best weekend of coyote calling to date - 03/14/18 12:45 AM

What do you do with your yotes?? If they're not worth much now for the fur, you could probably sell cleaned up skulls, de-boned tails, and maybe home-tanned hides for general public wallhangers.

Yeah back in the day in SD, it was said that if you got stopped with high power rifle & spotlight at night you were going to get a ticket!

Even though night vision is legal ohio law still says that you must have a continuous beam of light while calling coyote, fox and coon at night.

Re: Best weekend of coyote calling to date - 03/14/18 02:08 AM

Well aware of that and when I’m on stand I do have a red light shining out behind me to be in compliance with this law...
we’re simply not using red lights to scan with and shoot thus not drawing any attention from passing traffic and ect.
