Re: If you could trap only one animal - 03/13/18 04:45 AM

That's a tough one, coyotes and bobcats are just about a tie, but if I had to choose it would be cats, no wait coyotes, no wait cats...dang, I can't decide!

Re: If you could trap only one animal - 03/13/18 04:51 AM

Cats , but if It were legal I would love to trap a bear

Also if it were legal I'd like to trap a thief using a bear trap

Re: If you could trap only one animal - 03/13/18 04:56 AM

Not sure I can pick just one.

I sure do envy those guys who rack up piles of mink and muskrat... Both are rare here.

If they existed in good numbers here... Marten.

I do have good numbers of beaver and coyotes here. Decent cat numbers too... Hard to narrow that list down to just one.

Still can't decide. Lol

Re: If you could trap only one animal - 03/13/18 06:38 AM

Fox... if I lived in MD or PA.

If not, I'd have to with coyotes, even though it would break my heart not to trap otter. frown

I have to say coyotes. Just about everything else will show up in a couple set so yes I have to say coyotes!

Re: If you could trap only one animal - 03/13/18 10:44 AM

Due to the numbers right now.... and almost always.. it would have to be coyotes. Love to catch them kitties, but they would not last long if everyone targeted only them. We just don't have that many. Coyotes offer a self satisfaction feeling that you can be proud of. A job well done is you can outsmart a few.

Re: If you could trap only one animal - 03/13/18 10:52 AM

I got into trapping to thin out coyotes, but now I think it would be really hard for me to choose. Very few animals give me the satisfaction that I get from catching an old male yote, but I really have a soft spot for cats and fisher now, but we are only allowed one fisher and three cats in our state.

If I were to trap for money, it would probably be coon even though the market is in the tank. Coon is what we have the biggest population of, and the majority of the coon in our area go 2x or bigger. If we had a better muskrat population, I would say rats for sure, but I think coon is the best bet to turn a profit in our state even at $6 for a 2x.

Beavers. Followed closely by mink and coyotes

Re: If you could trap only one animal - 03/13/18 11:56 AM

As much as I like catching coyotes. Beaver would be my pick, just the beauty of nature they live in from swamps to bogs to little streams. Plus nothing like walking up and seeing a big Old beaver waiting for you. Plus good eating.

Wolves. They irritate me, and that's never a good thing to do.

Fox of both kinds if we had good numbers of them but since we dont probably coyotes, would say cats buy since we dont have many wouldnt get many catches in a season

Re: If you could trap only one animal - 03/13/18 01:14 PM

Beaver first, good quantities of them, large pelts to make anything you need from hats to blankets, the meat is edible if handled properly and cooked well and every part of the beaver is sellable (except guts)and they are just plain fun to trap. I would love to trap wolves also.

Re: If you could trap only one animal - 03/13/18 01:29 PM

Coyotes . When i started out in ADC work I trapped = beaver, fox, coon, opossum, and coyotes. All ways HATED beaver trapping. Clients always wanted it done in heat of summer. I came so close to being bit my cotton mouths MANY times. Lucky for me I have found several people in to QDMA that only care about removing coyotes and saving fawns. I LOVE CATCHING coyotes!

Re: If you could trap only one animal - 03/13/18 01:36 PM

For me, I really like fisher trapping. However, it isnt a huge challenge where I am. Just a matter of how many you want.

Other than that, likely beaver, just because its a bit more of a challenge.

If I was limited to only one though, I dont know if I would trap. I love all of it. From the challenge of footholds for canines, to snaring fox,...I love otter in crossovers, muskrats are fun, Beaver under ice are an awesome challenge, especially when you need to get 30, 50, 100 a year for quota here in Canada. Even snaring rabbit in winter. Seeing that first fisher in a 160. Even a coon in a trap excites me. I feel like only one animal would suck in a big way!

For me, it would be a spotted up cat. Seeing as I've never caught one, none here in my area, I may have to take a road trip next fall so I can.

Without question, for me, Adirondack Fisher. Unfortunately our DEC has mismanaged this species and their numbers in the Adirondacks are greatly decreased from yesteryear.

I have caught all the beaver and otter I want.
If I had to pick one It would be rats.

Re: If you could trap only one animal - 03/13/18 08:02 PM

Since I was a boy, I went trapping with my dad and he always let me set a few weasel traps. I still enjoy trapping them. But, since they're not really worth anything much, I won't trap them.

Wolverine for me, also. No question.

Re: If you could trap only one animal - 03/13/18 08:19 PM

If I could only catch one animal all the time, it would be fox, grey or red. If I had the chance to trap an animal one time that I’ve never trapped before, I’d have to say bear, but just a smidge above trapping a wolf.

Re: If you could trap only one animal - 03/13/18 08:23 PM

Well since I mostly trap canines and only fair at that, I would love to take a crack at wolves but I've also always had a hankering to trap a bear in a big old double long spring but it seems those days are long gone unfortunately.

Re: If you could trap only one animal - 03/13/18 08:29 PM

I would have to say Lynx. They have the softest and thickest fur of all the animals.
Nothing like a big pile of puffy lynx pelts in the Fur shed.

i figured you'd say marten Boco but i have held a lynx hide and understand.

Beaver, I love being in their habitat. Most people will never experience what it's like being in the middle of the swamp with no one else around.

Marten, with wolverine, wolves, and lynx close seconds for Alaska. For Florida it's bobcats.

I would say beaver. There's just something about a calm morning when the sun is rising through the trees and over the pond as you paddle to check your traps

I'd have to go with grinners, they're the fastest animal on earth and very elusive and you can't over trap em.

Salt marsh muskrats, and here's why.
I made some serious money doing it.
I never suffered from being outsmarted by a wily one.
They are a dream to put up.
Sometimes I just want a brainless day without hustle and bustle and stress. Rat trapping is just the ticket for that.
