162 days and praying - 03/18/18 03:10 PM

We finally have a good chance of Rain tonight!! 80% last time I looked. It’s been 162 days since we last saw a raindrop fall. I hope they don’t miss this forecast:( if it does rain I plan on standing in it and getting soaked, but I’m not getting my hopes up to high. It’s all in the Lords hands and I know HE knows what he’s doing. Praying

That's almost half a year. Hope you get some. A good nice and slow all day rain would help.

Yeah. Dry here. I cannot imagine God controlling the rain. So will pass on the prayers. But rain will sure be welcome when it comes.

Re: 162 days and praying - 03/18/18 04:04 PM

Depends on the area of the state. More than this.

Re: 162 days and praying - 03/18/18 04:08 PM

The average rainfall in Kansas goes from a 16-18" area in western Kansas, to a 44-46"area in southeast Kansas.

I think I saw it has been 180+ days for Dodge City since any measurable rain.

Big difference in west to east

Re: 162 days and praying - 03/18/18 05:31 PM

We normally get around 36 inches a year up in the north east. It has been since Oct that we have had anything of substance. We got one little ice storm over winter that left close to a half inch, but it and most of the other trace amounts have just evaporated. One thing can be said, it was the nicest dirt trapping conditions that I can remember in my 71 years! Now it's time to rain!

Re: 162 days and praying - 03/18/18 06:16 PM

Tac20 another thing to remember is that KS, OK, and TX have higher evaporation rates (on average) than us up here. So what 25-30 inches of precip in se SD or nw IA can do for crop production isn't what it can do down there.

You Kansan guys I hope you get your rain. Low commodity prices with normal production is tough enough. Low commodity prices and below normal production is a double whammy unless a drought is expansive enough (area wise) to actually affect the markets.

Grandpa always said “it doesn’t have to rain “, and all the old timers around here always joke that in the time of Noah and the great flood we only got a 1/2 inch out of the whole darn thing.

We had an old family friend that grew up in Oklahoma during the dirty thirties. He said it was so dry the Red River only tested 10% moisture.

Praise the lord. 1.25 of rain and now it’s snowing!!!!!!!!! It’s beautiful boys grin thanks for the thoughts, prayers and concern. It’s been a long wait and a bit stressful to say the least.

No rain gauge out but I'd say we r well on north side of 1 1/2. It's a blessing. We will at least have some grass to turn out on in a couple of months. No run off and ponds are drying up but it's a great start.

About 0.25-0.3 inches here, so drought still in full force.

Don't you fellas in Kansas get any Snow fall in the winter to provide some moisture to the water table?

Re: 162 days and praying - 03/21/18 01:27 AM

Depends on the year, but normally not that much snow, at least in the west. Our water table in the far west is over a hundred feet down. It's fossil water, so our precipitation doesn't do much for it.

Re: 162 days and praying - 03/21/18 01:53 AM

I guess you fellas need to have me come out there and do some trapping! Every time I set steel, it seems to rain or snow or both. I could solve your drought problems with a 2 week trapping trip! smile

What swifty said was true for the guys 30 miles west. We are blessed where i live. Water level is 20'-50' here. I have seen it at 19' in the wet years, and 65' in the dry years. Not bad for 19" of rain a year. We live and die by the water table for our livestock and irrigation, so every drop of rain counts for us. Out west the maximum recharge is 1"/yaer. we can go up or down 10'. we had 0" of snow this year, but I've seen 86" of snow in one winter.

We got .90" in my area of NC Kansas thank the Lord. Looks like there are decent chances of more Sunday-Tuesday. The wheat will have a fighting chance now.
