Wampus cat?

Wampus cat? - 03/19/18 07:34 PM

I thought this would be an interesting question to stir up some discussion. There are probably different meanings of the term Wampus Cat and this could be the case. My understanding has always been that Wampus Cat was more of a folklore creature even though I am a little Cherokee I haven't seen a Wampus Cat. I was recently looking at a discontinued fact sheet that I have put out by the Colorado State University Extension Service authored by Professor Major L. Boddicker. Most of you guys probably know him by books he put out including some trapping books. The title of this pamphlet is Preventing and Controlling Problem Bobcats and in it he makes the following statement: "Bobcats occasionally will interbreed with housecats in southern states to produce an odd-looking animal called a wampus cat."

Have you seen this cross and what other thoughts do you have on the wampus cat?

I also have the companion fact sheet titled Sets for Catching Problem Bobcats.

I believe the Wampus cat is the mascot for the Atoka, OK school athletics teams...

And for a completely useless unrelated fact... Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell's father, Jerry Cantrell Sr. (the guy "The Rooster song is about) was from rural Atoka.

Carry on. Lol

Re: Wampus cat? - 03/19/18 08:17 PM

its always been my understanding that, atleast around here, it was just a wild cat of no specific species. could be used interchangeable for a cougar, bobcat, or domestic mix or feral.

So is he saying a bobcat won't have sex with a yankee house cat?

The guy an idiot, when we were young we would scare younger kids about wampus cat in the woods. Ever a ten year old down here didn't believe in that fantasy critter but some grown man in CO. write books on them. Nearest thing I ever seen of a house cat mixed in with a bobcat is some crap that came out of the back side of a bobcat that look to have house cat fur in in.

Well got to go. Time to saddle up my unicorn to go black panther huntin tonight.

I agree with you guys. I was just making sure that being in Oklahoma that I wasn't too far north to see or know about the southern wampus cat. It was a serious statement that he made as it was in the paragraph where he is talking about gestation period and normal litter size. Just made me go "Huh?"

Back in the day when we'd be heading out to honky tonk my uncle would tell us "You boys stay away from them wampus cats". A wampus cat being a woman that should come with a prescription of penicillin.

Down in Florida, we pronounced it wompus cat, same sound as stomp. To my knowledge, the wompus cat is a mythical creature used to scare little kids if they act up at night. Worked on me as a boy. I know a guy who bred a bobcat to a housecat, and wound up with kittens. He called them wompus cats. The mother was the bobcat. Had a special cage set up to where only "certain parts" could touch. Said the bobcat ate two house cats before he made that special cage. Not saying it wouldn't happen in the wild, but it would be very rare at best.

Bobs will eat their own too, I have had it happen at least three times in my life. Also the sex act between bobs is quite a hair raising experience! That sounds like someone is getting eaten then too.

Re: Wampus cat? - 03/20/18 12:14 AM

I got a natural bobb tail cat from a family friend. She said that all the kittens had short or no tail. I just figured they had some Manx cat in the mix. The lady said she through the father was a bobcat. I didn't know one way or the other. That is until I saw actual hybred cats that where half bobcat and
half domestic. They are unmistakable. If you would like to see many many photos of these cross bred cats. Google is your friend search PIXIBOB Least I think that's how its spelled. When you see the prices they bring as pet's might get ya thinking.

Re: Wampus cat? - 03/20/18 12:55 AM

I've never heard of them, so we mustn't have them around here.
I've never been convinced that bobcats and domestic cats will crossbreed, I've known some folks over the years who claim they have a cat that's half "wildcat".
That guy in the video posted above has what looks to be pretty convincing, but I'd still be a little bit skeptical until I saw the official DNA work.

The secret to seeing one is ingesting large amounts of 'shine condensed through a radiator.

You're guaranteed to see stuff no one else has.

Yes, have known him for years. He used to live here, about ten miles from where I lived, back before he moved to Co and became a doctor!

Dang, that thing looks like something I might see see after downing a large bottle of wild turkey. Looks like I may have crafted it by hand on the same rip snarling drunk. Quite possible Savell assisted.

Re: Wampus cat? - 03/21/18 12:34 PM

When we were young there was a brush pile with leaves in a pasture next to the wood line on a hill and from a hundred yards off it look like a large brown cat. We would take other kids over there and show them the wampus cat. We would stand there looking up the hill at it and then scream it coming after us and take off running. No telling how many kids wet their self in the neighborhood over our wampus cat on the hill. Then we all go snipe huntin with a feed sack the next day, lol. Kids back then could come up with ways to entertain ourselves.
