Alaskan bush saw mill

I see them all the time on the Alaskan and bush type TV shows. The simple frame that guys put their chain saw in and use to cut timbers and boards from logs. My brother is law made one but said it seemed like a lot of work. I'm wonder if you guys that run them use some special chain in the saw. I'm not sure how big a saw he is running? I know it's a Sthil probably at least as big or bigger than the farm boss. Do you guys use anything other than stock chain? The log he was cutting on was cherry wood.

Go to arboristsite.com. It is a forum on chainsaws as big as TM. There is a sub forum on chainsaw milling. Everything you will ever want to know is there chainsaw related.

To save yourself some embarrassment do not use farm boss in the description of your saw... Lol. Big saws are required for milling of any size. 90 cc's and up is the preferred saw size.

Milled thousands of BF with an 046 . I get ripping chain in 100 foot rolls from Bailey’s. The biggest advantage is that they are portable. Lots of waste with the thick kerf.

Your brother was probably instructed to use rip chain but forgot or lost that page.

A ripping chain is a must. Mill the log as soon as possible after the tree falls, the drier it is the harder it is to cut. The bigger the saw the better.

I pretty sure what he needed most is a rip chain. I believe I told him that when he first messaged me what he was up to. This was a one time project he wanted to do for him self cutting this log. I actually suggested he load it up haul it down the road to an Amish mill. His answer to that was... "You know me I'm cheap and like to do things myself just to see if I can." He is very talented man beyond my level. I'm usually humbled when he ask my opinion on things..We swap ideas quit often and are both always piddling with something..

Ripping chain isn't exactly a must, but, sure works better.

If this is just a one time project, he can make his own rip chain from old chains he already has on hand. Just grind/file them at closer to 90° than 30°
