I had 3 coyotes bought back.
Top of $64.00 Averaged $19.00 and change. I think I'm going to have to re think trapping coyotes In WI next year. LOL

I'm a happy trapper, a few low grades were bought back but my average last I checked was 42.50 on coyotes.

Edit, just went down to 35.10, 59 out of 61 sold. The sec 3s brought it down alot.

Don't skin section threes. I know I hate it too but it's reality.. The buy backs are worth zero, average those in too to get your actual average..

I know what you meen but how do you tell a sec 3 from a low grade that still has some value?

If you are going to include skins that haven't sold yet into the average why not just figure your average before any skins have sold? $0.

I think the grading at this sale was a joke .. I had 4 damaged IIIs for the first time ever and I couldnt for the life of me tell you which hides they were .. and yes they destroy your ave price .

IMO In reality one should even count the ones you didn't skin in your average to an extent. You still got time, effort and expense in catching them and throwing them. That was the way I looked at wolf trapping here with the relatively high rate of bad skins. For example if you ditched 25% of your coyotes, that would be 25% negative value.

Ive heard most say they were graded harder but some how I ended up with 3 in the Semi and one heavy. I live in west central Indiana.... I couldnt tell you which ones those 4 were. The other 24 went to easterns where mine have always been. I trapped 1 week later then normal is the only difference from normal. They were late Nov to Mid December coyotes. They all came from 2 counties. My eastern grades were decent also.

The standard is to pick which ever method that makes you happy.

Adding buybacks as 0 makes no sense until they actually sell for 0. Likewise counting animals you didn't skin doesn't do anything for you either. Only thing that animal costs you was a few minutes remaking the set.

A worthless catch cost far more than a few minutes here. If I'm using a snare, snare is toast. Gonna spend time getting the snare off the coyote and recovering the lock and other components. Location could be ruined. More time setting a new location. Can't just leave the coyote laying there. Going to have to move it somewhere. Might haul it all the way home before I decide it is worthless. Then I got move it again. Sure the effort will vary and cost will vary, but it will be a big fat negative 0.

Obviously you don't have possum or coon, but do you count other animals in your traps against or average or knockdowns/snapoffs against your averages?

In that case opossum cost me a ton this year.

I count any tracks within 1 foot. It ups my catch, but kills my average.

You can average however you want but anything that has cost or value should be added or subtracted from the bottom line. All the pelts that sold in this sale just gives you the average for this sale. If they sell later add that to the average.

Not trying to negative, but it's the reality of the todays trapline.. I grade every animal as I check sets, then I make a decision to skin or not. I make that decision on the value of that animal based on time/effort it takes to process the pelt.

I read a million times on here that a cherry picked average is not a true average. Any average under a reasonable profit level don't interest me anyhow. I'm with you, average them anyway that makes you happy. Well, along as it isn't my way.

For raw fur sales,I only avg the skins that I send to auction when they sell.Any other skins that get sent to the tannery or I tan and sell or manufacture with are not counted in the raw fur sales avg.
Manufacture skins are avged separately thru value added sales.Tanning costs,travel for selling etc,and other material goods are figured into that part of the business.
Regardless of what you do with the pelts the cost of obtaining the pelts is always an expense.

Problem with a true average is it is really meaningless, unless you're a fur buyer that sent up furs you bought. That's why this debate usually happens. Usually when I talk to other trappers around here, or coon hunters or coyote callers, when I quote prices "I got X for the big coon", "Almost nothing for the small coon", "Y for the good colored coyotes with all their fur", "Z for the mutt looking coyotes", "I dont want to touch a coyote that is missing fur". That way they dont go into a sale with unrealistic expectations and I dont find hairless coyotes and dog chewed coon in my shed from some of my friends that wanted to donate the animals to me because they didnt want to deal with them.
