Scope recommendations for a youth rifle. - 07/11/18 06:16 PM

Looking for scope recommendations for a youth model rifle. I've got a 10 year old daughter and a 10 year old nephew that were gifted Ruger All American youth rifles in 7mm-08. We hunt in pretty thick timber. I don't recall ever shooting at a deer further than 75 yards or so. Thanks

For those distances you might consider a red dot like a Burris AR-332 or Sig Romeo 5.

Not certain what your budget is but I would consider a fixed power Leupold 4x - 40mm or something like that. Always dark in thick timber so gather as much light as possible with good glass.

I always thought 4x was to much under 100 yards. Maybe something like a Leupold FX-II 2.5x 20? It has a longer than normal eye relief but that might be good.

I picked a Leupold 2.5x8 for my kid when he was 10. Still a very nice scope. Their 2x7 would be good also.

I like the 3x9x40 mainly for the light gathering and larger field of view. Its what I have on just about everything now. I have a variety of brands leopold, red field and nikon.

Fixed power scope for kids. They will get bored and mess with power setting, scope will be on 9x when the deer comes out at 30 yds.

Anyone have experience with a low power scope such as a 1-4xx32. I was told they have a larger field of view and target acquisition would be easier. Thoughts?

I have two of those made by Leupold. A great scope! I have one on a 12 gauge slug gun and a Ruger 44 carbine. Great for a kid due to the fact that they will have no trouble acquiring the target through that scope. They do gather plenty of light in shaded, late day situations.

I would choose a scope they could use now and when they get older. As far as I know there is not a true youth scope.

Make sure when mounting the scopes are positioned correctly so as not to tag the young one. Make sure eye relief is correct for them and the scope is straight and level. Would be very cool if dad was to have a scope mounting kit to lap the rings till they were square, the kids could help with this and would get more out of it. Working together with dad is pretty fun!!

My daughter started out with a .243 topped with a Leupold 3-9X40 VX-I model. I figured she wouldn't have to shoot more than 100 yards or so. Lo and behold, she took her first deer at over 200 yards. Glad I didn't skimp on the scope!

Can never go wrong with a burris 3x9 fullfield, I put them on all of mine and the kids rifles.

Yes and Yes

Your target is deer at short ranges, right. The 1 X 4 will work well. A good fixed 2.5 or 3 X would work even better. Good field of view = quick target acquisition. Low fixed power = good light transmission.

Make sure to focus the scope for the intended ranges.

It is flat out surprising what a child's eyes can do with a simple clear recticule

I have a Leupold 1X4 on a 1967 model 742. Works well on running deer. At 1-2 power I can see the barrel in the scope so it is much like shooting a shotgun. Never had to adjust that scope since the day it was installed, about 1970. Not sure it is what I would give a kid. Kids need to learn to carefully sight and not to rush.

the vortex crossfireII or Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 and leave it on 2x

I have shot a lot of deer at 2x from inside 20 yards out to about 100 yards most in the 30-75

mount it is low as you can to the bore axis and set the eye relief up so that it works for her both standing and prone/leaning over a bench it may have to move forward as she grows

my son shot deer the last 3 years 2 of his 3 deer with the Nikon 2-7x32 the third was open sites (his choice he borrowed a 870 from me because he wanted to) he has to shoot slugs in the township we hunt he was 12, 13 and 14 years old for these deer.

My opinion would be 2.5 or 4 power but with the biggest objective you can get. Min. of 40mm.

Re: Scope recommendations for a youth rifle. - 07/13/18 01:22 AM

Big objective not needed on low power scope. It is mathematical.

Re: Scope recommendations for a youth rifle. - 07/13/18 01:24 AM

If shots are purdy much always under 100 yards, a fixed 4 power is all that's needed.
Stay away from a variable as bordom WILL set in and they will fidget with the scope.
