Cost of blacktopping - 07/11/18 06:58 PM

Does anyone have an idea what the cost of blacktopping a driveway is per yard of asphalt in Iowa, South Dakota, or southern Minnesota? Thanks

Roughly $3.50 per square foot, applied 3” thick. That includes prepping driveway with a decent existing base. These are prices in Pa.

If you're just redoing existing blacktop before it gets too bad, does the price go down much?

Beeman, get several quotes from different paving outfits. They do charge by the ton laid. I retired after 30 yrs of laying asphalt, I have nightmares about it still, lol. If you want a quick reference to how many ton you'll need, take measurements of your drive. Take length x width x depth ÷ 12 ÷ 13.5 and that will give you a close estimate on tonnage.

Try to be there when they lay it. Around here we get some of those crews that travel the area, then leave for a new area. They are famous for charging for 3in. but only laying 1.5in. They have screwed over a lot of people through the years. Got my dad as well as the place I now live. An old lady lived here before me, mix is only 1in. in my driveway and breaking up bad. Just make sure you get what you pay for.

Frank, I worked for Hancock asphalt for 23 yrs until Shelly bought them out. So I worked for Shelly for a few years but got tired of driving all over the state. Short stint with Koko then settled in to a local small outfit that had me home every night. I did like the night paving though, lot cooler but more dangerous. Good luck

Don't be so cheap, use your fur check to get it paved.
