Needing a new pair, going elk hunting. All the ones I look at have poor reviews.
Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks

I don't know when you bought your last pair of those but they have been made in China for at least the last eight to ten years and the quality has really gone downhill. My last pair, and I do mean my last pair, leaked like a couple of sieves right out of the box. They are supposed to be waterproof but my feet would get soaked walking through grass wet with dew!

Lowa, crispi, hanwag, lathrop and sons are all good. I use crispi almost exclusively now. Nathan's has some great boots made exactly to your feet but it does take some time to get them made.

I have a pair of Danner pronghorns that i bought 12 years ago. I wear them for everything. Just ordered another pair because the tread is wearing down on them.

Did you find they were smaller than others? I purpled five toes because my 1200 gr danners we're too small

I’ve settled on crispi gtx hunters, most comfortable out of the box boots I’ve ever owned. Very little break in time. Like everything else in the world, with boots, you get what you pay for IMO

I wore my redwing elk trackers once on an elk hunt I wouldn't do it again. I would go with kenetrek, crispi, hanwag, lowa, or even danner

Put another check by Crispi, great boots. The German made Meindl have been great boots as well.
I echo O99 comments on the Crispi's being incredibly comfortable right out of the box.

Lugnut, Bought last spring hiked up and down mtn for 147 miles with min 30# in backpack to get in shape. Hunted elk in CO in oct, turkey and small game, bear and deer in NY an PA in nov an dec then trapped mid dec till mid feb. And still no problems with them.

No leaking?

I like mine except for that. Had them about eight years now and still wear them (treated regularly with Sno-Seal) when I'm not expecting wet conditions. Maybe I just got a bad pair?

Only way to keep boots from leaking is to buy gortex, water proofing doesn't last

Re: Hunting Boots - 07/21/18 02:36 AM

The Elk Trackers have a Gore Tex bootie and are advertised as waterproof. Like I said above, mine leaked from Day One.

Rocky boots leaked after one season, my Cabela's outfitter boots are about 15-18 years old no leaks, maybe that boot wasn't made right? Idk

Long ago, had a very expensive pair of Meindl boots. They were horribly uncomfortable, soaked up water and doubled their weight, and nearly impossible to dry out.

I have or have had Scnees, Kenetrek, Danner, and a couple others but the last pair I tried, that are holding up better than any of the others by a long shot, are La Sportivas.

I have had a lot of leather boots in the last 50 yrs of mostly grouse hunting mtns of PA and I think sometimes they dont get the gortex bootie in there right and after a little abuse it fails. Only takes kicking 1 porky or thorn or some other small pointy object and u got a leak!

I have had the exact opposite experience with Meindl boots, except for the expensive part. LOL
