I think it's a puffball. When they mature and dry out, you stomp on it and it puffs out a "smoke" of sorts. Not good for anything I know of.

Puffers don't have stems.

Re: what is this - 07/24/18 10:49 PM

IF it turns black in a day or so it could be a shaggy mane. they turn to "ink" really quick and are a real tasty shroom. alot of the time the shaggys will have friends growing near by in a day or 2. if it is a shaggy the cap will start to open at the bottom and will start to blacken within a few hours. the ones i find are usually found in grass near the dripline of mature trees. usually the cap is more elongated on the shaggys and the outside of the cap will be more ragged.

I suspect you will see it turn to a flat top about the size of a pancake

In Idaho I would be sure it is a shaggy mane but I don't know if Indiana has a lookalike. Usually a fall mushroom here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanita_virosa

It's some type of Amanita. NOT edible. I've seen them many, many, times.

Re: what is this - 07/26/18 01:10 AM

Amanita virosa will kill 80 percent of those who eat it. The remaining 20 percent will likely need a liver transplant depending on how quickly they get treatment.
Do not play mushroom roulette.

Re: what is this - 07/26/18 11:36 PM

Has it flattened out yet.

I just had two come up in my back yard today

Re: what is this - 07/26/18 11:51 PM

That is not an Amanita virosa. AV has a smooth cap without the "skin flakes on it. it has a bulbous stem as well unlike the one in the picture.

Dunno

Saw it while I was running my Monday route. I'll tell you Monday if it's still there?

Re: what is this - 07/27/18 08:06 AM

Could be anything from a destroying angel (an amanita), deadly, to a tasty parasol mushroom (lepiota rachodes). Can't tell by just a picture.
If the flesh turns orange/rusty color in a couple of minutes after you cut it it's probably a lepiota. But never trust just one or two criteria when messing with mushrooms.

Re: what is this - 07/27/18 09:33 AM

I believe its an amanita . to early in the growth cycle to be shure , thus the earlier posted warning !
