1000 coyote year

1000 coyote year - 08/18/18 08:30 PM

Has anyone ever had or know anybody that has killed 1000 coyotes in a year? That's trapping, hunting, decoying, denning? Is it possible in states with high coyote densities? I know I catch a few coyotes and fox every year but the only times I kill them is fur season. I know all the work time and effort that goes into my catch and wonder if it would even be possible. Excluding aerial shooting poisoning etc.

A friend of mine took over 500 two years in a row running 100 foot holds in three months per year. He was fur trapping. For those wondering, it was not in ND.

a guy has a youtube channel 5911Ryan took like 490 something, I've heard some other claims of 550 ish but I have never heard of 600 broken unless it was back in the days of bounty when they could trap year-round pups too

Yes . During the 2007-2008 season , myself and two friends did it . 1283 to be exact . From November through the end of January. That’s counting called and shot coyotes and trapped. We didn’t count greyhound caught coyotes as the fur was hit or miss. It was kind of awful to be honest . I’d strive to do itt again but only cause I’m retired now. Working 60 plus hours a week and doing that was entirely too much.

Quite a few have done that and better when you count year round for damage control and live market and denning. The good trappers will tell you that aerial gunning isn't all that effective, after they go in behind the guns and still have large numbers.
One guy killed ~650 in a little over a month in Kansas. Several that have done ~100 in ~a week for fur.
The only reason most of us can't do that is we won't. We won't go where they are. We won't work that hard. We won't invest that much of ourselves.

That is amazing, lots of hard work for sure. I'm going to be honest even the guys killing 200 plus a year is an amazing feat. I always set goals every year and I usually hit it on fox but coyotes are a completely different story but then again they are just fur season goals and not year round goals. I kill coyotes for the sheep men and ranchers during calving season and usually by the time that's over I look like warmed up death (from November 1st through march). I guess I definitely need to up my game. All these guys are legends as far as I'm concerned.

Ryan’s yotes were Saskatchewan winter yotes and they were all processed.

Marty did not get to 1000 because at the tail end of the season he got a new truck and the “NEW TRUCK SMELL FROM THE CARPET “ turned the yotes off

I am definitely going to try snares this year, I dont usually set them in fact I've only set maybe a dozen in my life at fence crawl unders so I'm sure there's going to be a huge learning curve but I'll get it figured out.

My boy and me killed over 1200 coyotes on predator control jobs only in the last two and a half years and right at 270 cats. We also trap piles and piles of coons plus beaver trapping and beaver dam blasting. About 129 otters also in the last two winters plus a little over 300 muskrats and a good pile of nutria. Plus meat out and, or gland the winter coyotes, cats, beaver, rats and fox for lure and baits. Skin out the winter hides on top of that and shipped em up north to give them to Chinese in need of warm clothes.

Re: 1000 coyote year - 08/20/18 10:18 AM

The original question was 1000 in a year, not 1000 in a season.I know O'Gorman has done it numerous times, others have to.

Re: 1000 coyote year - 08/20/18 04:17 PM

Some places where animals are classed as vermin, the season is all year long.

Re: 1000 coyote year - 08/20/18 06:43 PM

I thought I was doing pretty good up until I asked that question. Looks like I definitely need to get at it better. Now I have some inspiration I guess. Lol I really only care about getting coyotes, utah doesn't allow us enough Bobcats to really worry about them. Generally there isn't a day that goes by that I dont think about killing coyotes.

yep, arithmetic says that anyone who can do a hundred in the month of prime fur can do 1200 in a year, and lots of guys you never heard of do a hundred for fur.
50 traps plus work ethic and numbers of coyotes is all that is needed really. You can't catch what's not there and I believe most people put out way too many traps on way too much land rather than load up a few hot spots.

That maybe but some of the examples given were how many were being taken in the winter months. Not trying to bust anybodies chops here just trying to point out the original question, huge difference between 12 months of aerial gunning,denning,poisoning,trapping,calling,etc.etc.,and somebodies catch during fur season.

Lots of gov men take over 1000 on a yearly basis.most are taken from the air however.the best i know of was 143 in 1 day by chopper.but that was 20 years ago in late feb with 2 feet of new snow.
