Kill Poll Karma Thread

There used to be a great thread of kill polls and how to make them, my link doesn't seem to work anymore to it. Any help?

Anyone have any good pictures of them? I am hoping to make some in the next couple weeks.

You can go elaborate on your poles with crosses to help hang the critter up or you can go simple, just a rod and your support wire. I have used both and I prefer to go simple now, just a 5' piece of rebar with annealed #9 wire welded on, pigtailed around and the tag end poking out a little to keep the snare from slipping off the end. (this way I can use a steel fence post driver to pound them in)

If the rebar is 5', how far do you pound the pole in the ground? I assume the pole acts as the stake as well or do you stake off separately?

I hammer the kill pole in about 18" in frozen ground. The kill pole is all in one, the snare anchor, the snare support and entanglement.

Depends but about 2ft of the pole minimum. Another thing o note is that if possible you want to use 60bar grade rebar since it is hardened more fun standard rebar and if harder to bend ( I know Ogomn wrote a good page worth of his findings on the subject in his last snaring update. And LT grey mentioned it here too in some of his older posts.)

And yes the snare is anchored off to the killpole as it acts as both a stake support and entanglement. One thing to say though is some trappers have used a long snares (5-16') stake and supported on the trail but a kill pole drove in the ground some 5-14ft away. Mainy used in fields and such when he makes his first circle he'll tangle up on the pole away from the trail and expire there. Instead of right on the trail.

The pole anchors the snare as well, yes. Drive them in as far as ground conditions warrant so the coyotes can't pull them. Typically we have pretty hard ground so I drive them in 24-30" most of the time, less if its frozen ground.

If weight is an issue you can make fiberglass killpoles. I know locklear uses them alot for beaver and coon. He recommends at least a 1/2" dia rod.

To make them you need to get some metal conduit barely big enough to slip over your fiberglass pole. But about a 6" section and welded your #9 wire to it like you would on rebar. After it cools slip it on your pole. Now rimp it on by lying it on an anvil and hitting the side with a hammer ( basically how you would hammer on a ferrule on snare cable. If one right it will not come off ! Bout the o oh problem is that they spin something bad but you could weld a washer to a smaller piece of conduit and crimping it like 6" above the bottom. From what the said animals don't chew or bit up the fiberglass poles for some reason.

good thread. Do you guys have problem pounding them in to frozen ground? Do you prefer 5/8's over 1/2" bar stock? I use precut smaller trees 2 - 3 inch in diameter in the low grounds. Never tried rebar there. Afraid it would pull out to easy?.?.

I drive my stakes with a slightly smaller version of a steel fence post driver. I can drive them through frozen ground about 100x easier than using a hammer. 1/2" is fine with me, easier to drive and lighter to haul around. It gets bent a little but straightens back out pretty easily.

Personally I prefer a killpole to be away from the anchor point. 2 wraps around and it's game over.

I watched one of Locklear's videos. He was pushing some of his kill poles in with his weight. Must work soft ground with no rocks.
Would think fiberglass poles would bend and not fair well with a coyote. Probably be fine with smaller critters.

How do you pull the Poles back out of frozen ground? Or do you leave them until it thaws?

I have a few ways but the vast majority if you clamp on some big vice grips or pipe wrench and spin the pole you can usually work them out fairly easily. The real tough ones I'll use an old bumper jack and a small chain or a 1 1/4" square tube puller I made that levers them out of the ground.

Good thread. My kill poles are fox ones, of half inch rebar with a 9 wire and loop welded near the top, patterned off of something LT Grey showed on here a few years ago. If I use them for coyotes, they will bend and that coyote will be turning them in the ground, but if I anchor the snare at the bottom with an extension, then they are just another way to hang a snare. I use them all the time, and I should just weld up some 5/8ths ones for coyotes.

Do many of you use these for beavers?
