Contest Ideas - 10/18/18 09:28 PM

Hi Folks,

Plan to be running the beaver tail contest again this year and wanted to see if anyone had creative ideas on how to switch it up or add a category. It's currently width because it's the easiest to judge. I don't foresee changing that but would like to add a bonus category that wouldn't be lofted in suspicion like weight or length. Maybe throw in a rat tail length category? Fire away.

I like the longest possum tail. I manage (knock on wood) to not catch many possums, but we have no muskrat at all around here.

Most chewed up (and healed) beaver tail. Need to be a healed over chewed spot or I might get inventive!

I was going to suggest a category for the most extreme or unique healed over damage to the beaver tail. I once watched a beaver working in the daytime as a giant early snowstorm approached. He seemed only a little wobbly but getting his work completed. After watching him a while I realized that he had no tail. He seemed to be holding his own. It caused me to wonder What happened.

Best wishes.

Why not a peeing contest? A good number of threads turn into it anyway, may as well make it official!

Muskrat tail seems interesting, although I see a bit of issue with where the measurement is started in regards to the base of the tail. Can be a bit of issue with exactly where the measurement is taken from at the fur/tail junction. Thats why the widest tail was started. A bit easier to say yes or no when it comes to a tie, since the tail has a definite edge. Weight is out, as there is just far too much variation in scales and such.

What else could be measured, I don't know. Ill think on it a bit.

Longest stretched hide is interesting I think. Tip of fur on the end of the tail to tip of nose. Couldnt do it with coyote because I have 70 lb "coyotes" that arent quite wolves, so the southern guys would get screwed.

Why not longest coon stretched hide. Tip of nose to tip of hair on tail stretched and dried. Coons are common, so it is inclusive, everyone has them, and there are no serious variations like with canines. Could also do it with fox, fisher or otter, but I think coon would be kind of fun because they are so widespread.

Sorry Boco! lol

I like the addition of a coon category due to prevalence. What measurements could we do on carcass? That takes away from folks storing em or using prior years to game the system. Another thing to keep in mind is most submissions are from lone trappers where 3 hands isn't an option when measuring and taking pics.

One that comes to mind for rats would be length from mouth to tip of anus when on back.

longest coon "bone" , entry made by mail that way you have all the winner and near winners and they can't come back the next year.

if the price doesn't improve it will be a reason to trap them besides just needing to get out and trap or population control
