Some of you know I am on a quest to get my first bow kill that doesn't have gills.
I will give away a 4oz bottle of Dobbins lure, winner's choice, to the first person that picks the date, morning or evening and sex of that first kill.
11/17/18 mid morning Tree 6 incher that jumped in front of your arrow, between you and the 10 point. (I've killed many a small tree first year archery.)
Had 2 chances this morning and messed them both up.
Got in the stand late. Started calling a couple grunts then into the doe bleats. Small spike buck coming in on my right 15yds. I'm shielded by some branches so I draw and wait for him to clear. He clears and starts a jog (I have no idea why). I follow him as he rounds a set of small trees he's inside ten yds. he stops and walks. I move ahead to an opening where I will have a clear shot and wait on him to get there. He steps in the open and I let it fly. It's a foot left zipping passed the front of him. He bolts. He circles back but is in too much clutter and eventually walks off into the swamp.
I'm settling down from that debating whether or not to call it for the morning when my phone vibrates. It's a text from my wife thanking me for a wonderful morning. I'm putting the phone away in my top pocket and spook 2 does 10ft away that snuck up behind me.
I don't think anybody had picked today but if you did, my apologies.
This whole experience is certainly garnering respect for those archers that are successful.
Coming out of the woods this am I noticed a new den. lol
Been rain on and off so I'm trying to make the most. Missed a doe last night from the stand so tonight I tried to change up. The wind is blowing a bit so I stayed on the ground. I have a few pelts sewn together and took that with me. I throw it over my shoulder just to break me up a little. I find a clump of trees that will shield me but let me see through them. I start calling using doe bleats. I got movement on the other side of the swamp. It's a buck but I can't tell rack size. I start moving parallel to him on my side of the swamp. I lose him. I'm making my way slowly from tree to tree calling every now and then.
I reach a spot that has some distance between trees so I get low and am making my way to this big oak when he appears on directly across from me. He must have circled back on me. I freeze and am almost laying on the ground. lol He looks around but doesn't seem to pay me any mind, turns, climbs the bank and disappears in the brush. (8 pointer) I'm freaking. I hear him but can't see him. I'm crawl to the oak. I make my way 3 more trees and sit at the bottom of it and watch him through the brush. He appears to be freshening up a scrap. I start grunting. He looks around. My eye catches movement to my left. It's another buck on the other side of the swamp. The first buck heads back toward the new buck. Next thing I know they both are running off IN the swamp. The wind was in my face how did they make me?
Hobbie...tomorrow is the day...10 point be in the woods so I ain't wrong...lol I'm in...
Donnie
Sorry Donnie, it was a miss. 20yds right over the back at the shoulder blades. Got in the stand when I got back from checking trap about 8:45. After about 20mins rattled for 5 and he came strolling by about 9:25-9:30am. I shot, he ran 20yds, then walked away while I was trying to get another arrow. Disappeared into the brush.
Good luck Hobbie Trapper. What kind of black powder rifle you using? .45 cal. here, Green Mountain target barrel, KY long rifle, custom South paw build.
No gun this year. I'm on a quest to get a bow deer.
Nice....best of luck..it was a tradition every year on New Year's Eve I'd be with my best friend bow hunting.. It was a rewarding kill for me if I got one...try it....bet you'll like it..
