Sinus Headache Death

Sinus Headache Death - 11/20/18 02:58 AM

For a couple months out of the year, every year for the past decade or so, I get these insane sinus headaches. They come on all of a sudden and take me to my knees. It feels like someone is literally pounding a 6" spike into my eye. I haven't found a cure. Sometimes a boiling hot shower with lots of steam works, I use pressure points to drain my sinuses, nette pots, laying my head back beyond what was ever intended, just about anything I can think of. Some of these things work sometimes but nothing always works. I'm just getting over one as I type but usually I get them about an hour after I go to bed. I believe the cause is the change in weather and the switch from humid air in the summer to dry heat in the winter from various heaters. Yes, I have tried humidifiers with varying success. So now that I have told my tale of woe, any suggestions or does anyone else suffer?

Grandma used to shove a finger full of Vicks up our nose whenever we complained with it. Don't remember for sure if it worked or not but we quit complaining.

laugh I'm desperate enough to try it. Still not desperate enough for a doctor yet. I'll give it another decade of suffrage.

I suffer from them often. Certain foods like eggs and dairy are inflammatory agents. I've learned to limit myself on those foods. For me Cheddar cheese brings them on within minutes while mozzarella does not affect me. For about a year I suffered trying to figure out what the cause was.

Also use a saline rinse while you shower, which is different from a netty pot. You mix either distilled water or bottled water into a small bottle dump in a pack of saline squeeze in the nose. Buy it in the pharmacy section

Vicks and hot showers for me when my sinuses start nothing me. Thinking I'm finally though about a seven bout of sinus issues myself. Don't think mine are quite as bad as yours though.

I've had a sinus headache most of this year, finally went to the Dr's and had a mri said I got a pansinutitis. I got alot of the same symptoms but my eyesight is jacked up too from it. Got some antibiotics now, guess I'll see if it goes away.

Re: Sinus Headache Death - 11/20/18 04:28 AM

I get basically the same thing, but not a constant headache … it come and goes and seems to be located several inches behind my left eye. I drink extra water and coat the inside of my nose with Vicks. If they are at night when going to bed … I put Vicks on forehead, around my eyes and under my nose and place a paper hanky so it sticks to forehead and covers my nose and I breath in Vicks. I seems to work … but it doesn't cure what ever it is the causes it. I guess it has something to do with the dry heat and atmospheric pressure.

Re: Sinus Headache Death - 11/20/18 06:34 AM

I get something similar. I think they are brought on by allergy to pollens and dust. Allergy pills help me, but the best thing I have found is application of ice to the temple, usually both sides, for as long as I can stand it. Once in a while if I get the ice on early, the pain goes away. Usually though, the ice reduces the pain enough to get thru the day. The other thing I have found is I have them less frequently if I eat regularly - I commonly skipped lunch in the past. Can't do that or I get a really bad headache the next day.

Good luck.

Well, I tried the vicks trick with a dab up the nose last night and I was able to get 6 hours or so of sleep so at least that's something. Hopefully this goes away in a few weeks and doesn't last months like last year.

Are you certain your adenoids left you as a young adult?

Pain or discomfort in the body means there is a "battle" going on. If you still have your adenoids your sinuses would be the battleground.

Finster, you really should go to the doc. I have the same problem in spring and early winter. I take Claratin , which I'm not thrilled with, but the sinus headaches are gone!

Re: Sinus Headache Death - 11/20/18 12:41 PM

Finster, see a Doctor... migraines? My son had headaches that would incapacitate him, his doctor tried everything, nothing worked. One day it was so bad I took him to the emergency room. The Doctor prescribed PROPRANOLOL, the headaches have been far and few between now. And if he gets a headache, no where as bad as it was. See a Doctor, and you might want to mention, PROPRANOLOL.

Meh, I hate doctors... Seems like nothing more than glorified drug dealers anymore. Maybe if I need stiches (and don't do it myself) or a broken bone or a limb is falling off, I'll mention it the next time I have to go.

Re: Sinus Headache Death - 11/20/18 01:00 PM

I have very similar symptoms and finally went to the Dr. they were not sinus headaches at all but migraines. If I take pseudoephedrine when I feel them starting (always starts with pain behind the left eye) they are not as severe.

telladoc or urgent care for antibiotics.

and lose the starches and carbs out of your diet - I know it sounds weird, but this has helped me reduce sinus issues almost 100%

Re: Sinus Headache Death - 11/20/18 01:03 PM

Before you go see the Doc, try this.
Drink a large cup of strong coffee, and eat some dark chocolate. And if that don't help, try again, this time chew a 6" piece of weeping willow branch. The yellow ends with the buds are the best.
To sleep CBD oil. Don't knock it till you try it.

You might find a nearby American of Finnish Descent (Super American) and request to use his wood fired sauna. No more sinus problems. Load the stove so as to maximize steam output and minimize heat-that you don't burn your widdo ears off (or other appendages).

Make sure your house has ample humidity in it. Keep those sinus flowing, Use a Neti pot or some form of irrigation of the nose and sinus. You are probably spending more time inside where you could have dust mites, mold or mildew especially if you have a newer tighter house. Make sure furnace filters are changed.

I take Claritin D 24 hour. I know when my sinus symptoms start, so I start taking the medicine before it gets bad. And I drink plenty of water to make sure everything flows. Some time I have to take it for 6 weeks. I would start it for about 3 weeks. And just take some thing for pain. If you still have problems. It’s probably something else.

Re: Sinus Headache Death - 11/20/18 03:06 PM

I has chronic sinus infections for years mostly above my right eye. I'd go diving and get so plugged up felt like my right eye was going pop out. My doc give me antibiotics seemed to clear up. First time I'd go in the water it would be right back. Doc finally sent me to a ears nose throat specialist. He looked me over did some x-rays. Said my sinuses weren't draining right because my nose was a mess. Scale of one to ten my right nostile was moving may a 2 for air flow.. Said being in the the water much as I was or taking any smoke. Being a fire fighter I was not going to get the infections to stop with antibiotics.
He went in broke my nose straightened things out. Didn't even have to rotor root my sinuses said they looked good once he was in there. Was a week of pain for me with splints in my nose. But that was like 25 years or so ago now. I've barely had a cold since. Best thing for my breathing and sinus problem I ever did. Go to a good doc get it looked at.

Re: Sinus Headache Death - 11/20/18 04:20 PM

I emphathize. For years after college, I worked in lawn care and every spring I would get a debilitating sinus infection. It had to be from one of the chemicals I was utilizing daily as now I no longer get them the same. If you suffer yearly, there is a seasonal allergy that is triggering your response to your body. Your sinuses combat the allergy by producing excess mucus and tries to flush the allergen out of your system. Your body is still around the allergen and your body still fighting it. Many of the over the counter allergy medicines such as Claritin might likely help yoou before you develop the infection from your body constantly fighting. Unless you stop, watch diet, consider dust, all pollens, pet dander and any million other possible allergies - you will need a doctors test to determine your triggers. Consider your timing and what is blooming and try to correlate if you can. Is it fall? When you turn on furnace? Before?
Headache is just from the sinusoidal cavity infection - kind of by a byproduct. You need to figure the trigger out and either eliminate it or mask it with a drug......a doctor could help you speed the process of figuring it out but I understand.......

Re: Sinus Headache Death - 11/20/18 10:57 PM

I suspect you have nasal polyps. The polyps hang down and make it easier to get sinus infections. .You should get checked by a doctor. The polyps are easy to remove and their removal would give you very quick, permanent relief.

Get your back molars checked. Sometimes having your upper molars removed will take care of sinus headaches. I read about this the other day in a dentists office. It will require dental x-rays but getting rid of the pain might be worth it

Re: Sinus Headache Death - 11/21/18 11:40 AM

since its only two months a year its probably a seasonal allergy. try taking clariton and flo nase a couple weeks before you think its about due. they are otc meds. taken once a day. if it is an allergy that ought to do it. continue until its normally over without meds. by starting early the stuff is in your system. will prevent it occurring or reduce it by a bunch. I get a seasonal allergy every year from mid august till we get a good killing frost. rag weed. really kicks my but without those two drugs. I start taking them about aug 1st

See a doctor!

I can relate to several posts. After surgery to correct a broken nose and open passages, I still suffered from chronic sinus infections. I went to the doctor and asked for antibiotics that target the sinus. Doctor said “these are really expense and can cause diarrhea”. I replied “I don’t care if I sh#t my pants”!, I want this to be over. Those antibiotics did the trick. Since then, I take Alervert D at the first sign of congestion.

Re: Sinus Headache Death - 11/21/18 02:41 PM

I understand not wanting to go to the doctor, they do seem to just push pills. Nobody (well, most people) don't want to be on a pill for the rest of their life if they can make minor changes in their life instead. For plugged sinuses, like when I have a cold, my cure is hot showers and spicy foods. Spicy as in I get the hiccups, cant talk, restless legs, and snot and tears pouring down my face spicy. It works well, if only temporarily. Also, don't blow your nose too much. The pressure is typically from swollen/inflamed tissue inside your sinus cavities, they likely aren't just plugged up with snot and buggers. Every time you blow, you make the swelling worse, doing the exact opposite of what you want to accomplish. In fact, a simple pain killer like advil/tylenol also has anti-inflammatory effects and can go a long ways towards reducing swelling in your nasal cavities.

Finster

I have had sinus infection problems since a teenager and 75 now. If I don't stop it, the last 10 years it has turned into Vertigo and I will become bedridden.
Because I ignored the symptoms, three years ago the Vertigo caused me to fall and injure myself.

I have a Sinu Pluse Elite machine, my daughter purchased it for me, that is power washer doing the same thing a Nettie Pot does. The first symptom
of sinus infection, I use it evenings and mornings until I know it is under control and then maybe 3 times a week and it does the job.

You don't have to purchase the packets to mix in your Nettie Pot. The mixture is 1/4 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda for a Nettie Pot
or double that for the machine as it holds two Nettie pots.

I would suggest wearing head gear that keeps the front of your head warm, down close to your eye brows, during cold weather. I have found keeping your nasal passages covered helps.

Hope this works for you. It keeps me out of the bed and off the floor.

You could be experiencing cluster headaches. I get something similar in spring and fall usually. It's usually my left nostril plugs up and it feels like someone has stuck me in the left temple with an ice pick. You can get an over the counter medication called Excedrin Migraine that has given me some relief. Zyrtec seems to help too. If it gets too bad for you, get a prescription from your doctor for Imitrex. It will kill your headache in a minute, guaranteed. I used the injectable to get the quickest relief.

At first I thought they were cluster headaches. Believe me, I have looked into this. However, I'm 99% sure it's a sinus issue. If and when I can get my upper sinuses to drain, I go from on the floor in pain to river dancing within a minute. I do, as with everyone's suggestions on this matter, appreciate the input.

Zyrtec works for me. Clariton D also helped but zyrtec seems better. I have narrow sinuses and will not all is surgery on nose. Both meds are over the counter and need to be taken daily as in maintenance dose. Take even if you feel good. Good luck!
