My best week of trapping ever - 12/06/18 10:21 PM
Today wrapped up my week of trapping on public land here in WV. Last year i had the same section of swamp and there wasnt much water in it. This year was our wettest on record, so there is plenty of water. Monday morning i set out with my colony traps and 110s. After about 10 minutes of wading around i had went over my hip waders 3 times. So i left and went home to get the jon boat. I returned and managed to set 10-15 traps. Tuesday my best friend went with me and we checked the traps from the previous day. We caught 7 rats and 1 beaver. We managed to put out another 20-25 sets. Yesterday he suggested that i take my kayak to check traps since he couldnt tag along. The kayak is much easier to maneuver around than the 1436 jon. I ended up with 24 rats and 2 beaver on this check. I believe the kayak was nearly at capacity. Today i decided to pull all of my traps, so i tied the jet sled to the back of the kayak. The first few sets were untouched. I knew that the 3rd day catch usually falls off but i was not feeling hopeful. I did manage to catch 10 more rats today. All in all i learned a lot the past few days. It was my first experience trapping feed beds and huts. I am looking forward to chasing them again in January when i get home from the towboat. 41 rats and 3 beaver in 3 checks. I am tickled to death!
