What do you do for a living?

What do you do for a living? - 12/14/18 11:29 AM

Trappers seem to be a diverse bunch. Just curious what everyone does for a living. I have a lawn mowing business and drive semi hauling grain for a farmer. I hauled 700,000 bushels of corn and beans to market last year.

I fill in for employees on vacation at a local trucking company. I also do pickups and deliveries 2 days a week for a local hardware store. I do ADC work. I create oil paintings from client photos. I play in a band. I'm in the process of setting up a greenhouse as a side business. I'm one step closer to my dream of a Christian summer camp for kids and winter camp for trappers that wish to experience "The Eastern Shore."

You might say "I'm living the dream."

This is a cool thread, neat to see what everyone does for a living. I work on a ranch that is owned by a universtiy, so we do a lot of cattle nutrition research, sheep nutrition research, repro physiology stuff, brush control work, blahblahblah. Coolest thing I've done in my 12 years here is fly in a helicopter and catch deer and antelope to put on collars for some wildlife research. HELICOPTERS ARE AWESOME. But most of the time I'm just a rancher. You know, feed the cows and sheep, fix the fence, break the ice, oh yeah and trap as much as I can. Happy trapping!!

I am an H2O Repurification Technician ( AKA sewer Rat) for nearby city. I work in the Board of Public Works wastewater treatment plant. Also the back up Compost site operator. Work full time just for the health insurance. I also weld at home in a side business. Making tomato cages from galvanized cattle panels each spring is what pays for my hunting trips in the fall. I do a little ADC trapping in the spring, summer and fall. I have a small business called Double J Outdoors where I do some guiding (mostly nite predator hunts) and also sell Nite Lite Brand lites and some trapping supplies. Every now and then I'll build some live traps for local sale. And I am doing some unique art made from steel and junk iron. Hope to do more after I retire. smile smile

Guess I should’ve mentioned I’m a marine veteran as well. Surprised there aren’t any other farmer/Ranchers? Full time anyway, seems normal to me in my country but I guess aren’t many people that make there living off it without a side gig/day job. Come to think of it if I was smart I’d have a side gig instead of trying to learn how to trap......

Over the years I had about every job in the book, all the while hoping to build up enough of a clientele to go full time as a taxidermist. I did nothing but taxidermy (except fur/ADC trapping) from '87 on. Before that it was taxidermy and seasonal tech/Conservation Aide for the agency now called the Natural Resources Conservation Service, an offshoot of the USDA. I also did stints as a pulp cutter, pallet bolt mill-hand, carpenters helper/builder, garbage man, construction laborer, well driller's gopher, land survey crew rodman, Youth Corps supervisor, tree-planter, factory rat (injection molding plant), factory rat (metal stamping plant), and general farm laborer. I am now officially retired and spend my day as the care-giver of my Bride who is fighting M.S. tooth and nail. She is my hero.

I worked in maintenance doing welding, carpentry, plumbing, fixing machines (mainly printing presses), stuff like that. I am retired now. I enjoy baking. I just made two pumpkin rolls today.

Was a machinist the first 5 years, owned a trapping supply, fur buying and animal control business for over 10 years, fishing lure business for 7 years and the last 22 years as a project manager for a commercial roofing company. Will semi-retire next May and drop to 3 days a week until I decide not to. Then I'll do whatever I want for as long as I can.
