How many guys have had to release one of these? - 01/14/19 05:32 PM

Who has released one? I've caught four and two this season. NY DEC says we don't have any so they won't open a season in our area.

Oh boy! Better you than me.

I've been seeing a bunch of them near me, but haven't caught one yet. I'm just south of you so I do have a week season on them.

I'm not a fan of Fisher because they put such a hurting on the turkey population.

Re: How many guys have had to release one of these? - 01/14/19 06:14 PM

When I lived in MN I did a couple times. They would end up in my dirt hole sets. I just cut a fork stick, pinned them down, and took the trap off. They didn't seem no worse off. I was using 1.75 coils. I even remember giving the one some fresh meat before I released him and he gobbled it up. I figure he lost some hunting time while in the trap so compensated him for his time. Sure was a lot of growling!

Re: How many guys have had to release one of these? - 01/14/19 06:35 PM

Worse yet is the otter. They are nice until you touch them with something, then all he77 breaks loose. Get the snare pole on them with out missing and hold on tight. Hope you have a back foot catch, much easier to release. I have released a lot of bobcats (easy). Fisher, i have released a few (still easy with the bucket/pail) but otter are just nasty.......jk

I dispatched one with the catch pole during PA's season this year. They aren't very pleasant in the trap haha.

Re: How many guys have had to release one of these? - 01/14/19 06:43 PM

Yup, never a dull moment with them. I cannot think of a dry land set a fisher won't mess with if found.

Agreed as above tho, otter are nuts.

Re: How many guys have had to release one of these? - 01/14/19 07:47 PM

They are not all that difficult to release if you have a catch pole. For some reason they seem to have a reputation that they really do not deserve in many ways.
They often seem to wonder into a canine set when the fisher is out of season or into a cat set when the season on them has ended.

NYyotekiller, PGC claims they opened up 90 some fisher an couldn't find any turkey parts in them? But our turkey population is dwindling also in my area.

Re: How many guys have had to release one of these? - 01/14/19 08:38 PM

I had to release one a couple years before we were allowed to keep one here in PA. He go out of the catch pole and almost got my leg on the first try, but the second went pretty easy.

Coon and possum will destroy a whole nest when they find it.

I think the fisher are harder on squirrels and rabbits than they are turkey.

I just put a bucket over them. Not that hard so far. They are wiry and fast though.

Meanest thing I ever released was a barn cat, that sob meant business. Man did he tear up everything in chain reach, high and low.

We have the same situation in MN. We have a 5 day season.
I drowned one in a water set during regular trapping season that I turned in to the local CO. He told me he's seeing more and more of them every year being hit on the highways.

I released an otter once. They're no picnic either.

I almost forgot. Toughest thing I tried to get out of a 330 was a very tight-fitting snapping turtle. Most things you take out of a 330 are dead and not trying to bite you. Plus, a catch pole doesn't work on a snapper.

Yep, released a very nice male 1 week after our fisher season was closed. He worked a coyote set.

I’m not buying that either. Ever since I’ve been seeing the few Fishers around our turkey population has roughly been cut in half, maybe more. Found a ton of turkey carcasses up in trees that winter, and feathers scattered on fresh snow. Can’t imagine anything else would be doing that.

I don"t believe that fishers are a threat to turkeys.I open every one that I catch and have never found evidence of a turkey.

It's all fun and games till one slips out of a catch pole........ then it's every man for himself.... been there, done that.

Re: How many guys have had to release one of these? - 01/15/19 03:52 AM

I have to agree that an otter is the toughest for me to wrangle in order to release it. I have never caught a fisher though. Looks like a long legged otter to me. I would not look forward to that job either.
I do have a technique which I have used many times for otter if anyone wants to PM me. I never seem to have a catch pole on me in the middle of the beaver swamps, but my method works very well and the otter has always swam away good as new.

I don’t think it’s that hard if you use a catch pole

Re: How many guys have had to release one of these? - 01/15/19 04:06 AM

Or a piece of plywood with a notch hole cut in it, to isolate the critter a little.

That's what I used year when I got one about a month after the season ended. I was fortunate as he took off like a rocket with little attention of getting more acquainted with me.

I live in the country. A couple years ago, I had fisher tracks in my yard. After a few months, the squirrels and rabbits started disappearing. So, did the fisher.

I won't even set in the woods anymore. I can't keep them out of my traps. And they are miserable to release LOL

Re: How many guys have had to release one of these? - 01/16/19 12:47 AM

I released a YOY male several years ago. I did not have a snare cable with me so I broke off a limb and made a y stick that I could push down on him right behind the head. As I was releasing him from a 1.5 coil (coon set) he grabbed Bit down) on my boot. All the time this was going on it was snarling, growling etc. I got the trap free and he kept chewing on my leather boot for 20-30 seconds even free from the trap. I am glad he chose to just chew and not jump forward. I finally gave swift kick of my leg and he dislodged and ran off still snarling and growling. The one several years later with my good snare cable was much easier and quicker.

Never caught one but I have released otter and would rather try one of your critters maybe one with both hands vs another otter.
